The man has had enough! After over a decade of fighting allegations of doping and constant questions of his integrity by high-profile cyclists, anti-doping agencies, Journalists and US Senators, the fight has worn down the once mighty athlete. This is the latest Lance Armstrong news.
What is going on?
The USADA is stripping Lance of his 7 Tour de France titles and his silver Olympic medal and banning him from all USADA sanctioned events because they suspect him of doping. Yes, you read that right, they suspect him, no evidence of any rules broken, just suspect him of doping. This is the result of him giving up the fight over proving his innocence in this matter.
Why even test for doping?
This seems to be the question of the day. How can a sanctioning body do this without any failed tests? Over this mans career he has been the most tested athlete in history. they have tested his urine, hair, fingernails, all with negative results. One could say they know the science of Lance Armstrong! By making this decision one has to ask why they are testing at all. What does this say for the integrity of the testing program? And my biggest question is why is this OK at all? What kind of a president does this set for the future? If they decide a person might be doping they can destroy his career?
Why did he quit fighting?
Mr. Armstrong was quoted as saying this nonsense was effecting his foundation and family and enough is enough. Lance is the founder and chairman of the Lance Armstrong Foundation. He is also a cancer survivor, having beat late stage tescular cancer in 1996. This man has raised millions of dollars for cancer research and development and is an icon in his sport. He has fought for everything he has achieved and finally has had enough of all the time it was taking to deal with this.
What now?
He will be stripped of his titles and medal, and he will be banned from competing, but this will not sit well with the masses of supporters he has. Many people who are not fans of cycling are stepping to the plate for this man. There is so much at stake here not only in this mans reputation, but in the ability of a sanctioning body being able to destroy a man or woman's achievements because of suspecting behavior, without any real evidence.
Any man who can beat all the odds this man has beaten, and also achieve all the success in working with a foundation that helps humanity, is OK in my book. My judgement has to side with Lance, until evidence says otherwise. How about you? What are your views on this?

I'm pretty sure an athlete was sent home from the olympics this year for failing a "re-test" on urine samples given at the 2004 olympics, what's the point in doing a test if you will re-test is 8 years later? Just test me when I am 5 years old and use that sample please
I hear ya, but it is still all hearsay. He did not fail a test, and that is what the doping commission is all about. I guess in a sport that is so infested with drug use, if he did use them it was still an even playing field, so to speak. One would hope he did not, but like I said, it will always be a he said situation. Thanks for reading!
Absolutely, a lot of riders are coming out now claiming they "had to dope" in order to keep up with the competition. I think that very few of the top riders during that era were not doping. It had become a normalcy and I think that Lance should retain his status as one of the best. He was doping, but he was also competing with "dopers"...
I don't follow this stuff as it can be so full of hype, but as I am an avid cyclist after commuting more than a few miles every day even in Calgary's harsh winters for decades, I certainly know who the man is. What a pity that these cold-hearted official, for whatever devious reason, have the power to do such a heinous thing!
It has become a common practice to ruin athletics when it is believed they have broken rules or law. But the situation with Lance is that they did their drug testing and the results revealed that he was clean, so they decides that they will use evidence from his friends, so what do you need the drug test for, if you do not have confidence in your testing, simply stop it, and rely on information from is disgruntled friends
I am with you, Shawn! I am with Lance on this one. The most drug tested athlete and he is treated as guilty! What a croc. It makes my blood boil! If I know Lance, he will continue to help people with cancer research through his foundation and not look back. He said he is done, because he needs to focus his energy into something worthwhile. Great article, Shawn!
Unbelievable, after all this man has gone through and the people he's inspired. So sad!
I think it is a very sad ending to a wonderful career. Why do we seem insistent on tearing down people who have worked the heart out to achieve the top of their game, and following on from the fight for his life. I don't get it!!
As if he hasn't shown enough integrity over the years! I think people are tired of not being able to compete with him. He shows everyone up year after year and others have not had to fight the physical battles he has had to do it. I don't understand how he became a thorn in the side of his antagonists but I'm amazed that when life couldn't stop him these idiots were the ones to wear him down. It's just sad.
I agree with every one of you and I'm very glad that we are all on Lance's side. He is a living legend here in Texas and believe me, people are fed up & outraged with how this Texas Legend has been mistreated for years. I think it's just pure jealousy. If Lance was a racehorse he would be Secretariat. No one could believe what he did either.
