From the Zoological Park to Castle Drogo, England’s youngest castle, there is no shortage of things to do in Dartmoor. It’s wild and dramatic scenery has inspired many tourists to venture to the south coast. What people might not know is that Dartmoor is a hugely popular hub for mountain biking, and Dartmoor’s challenging terrain recently played host to the world’s best cyclists in the Tour of Britain road race. There are also some great family-friendly rides around the area, including The Granite Way and Plym Valley.

There are over 480 routes across Dartmoor, varying in length and difficulty. Whatever your riding experience, we would highly recommend that you cycle Dartmoor National Park. You won’t fail to be inspired as you ride around this rugged landscape and its rural fringes. There are lots of opportunities for cyclists to use the network of bridleways, byways and quiet country lanes. The Granite Way, providing sign posted traffic free cycling along a disused railway line, is ideal for families.

If you want to explore Dartmoor in confidence and see all that there is to see, we would highly recommend hiring a guide to lead the way around the bridleways and byways of this exquisite countryside. Dartmoor has something for everyone, offering a complete cycling experience and if you have travelled to the area without your bike, don’t worry! Numerous bike stores and hire stalls are available around the edges of the Park, in Newton Abbot, Torbay, Ivybridge, Plymouth, Tavistock, Okehampton, and Exeter.

Before you go be sure to check out the detailed information 1 South West provides on each Hub across the area, so that visits can be planned with confidence. The 1 South West interactive map also provides details for ‘facilities’ such as Dartmoor bike hire, bike sales and cycle friendly places to stay in and around Dartmoor National Park.

Cycling Dartmoor is a breathtaking experience. On any given day its moors will welcome skilled riders searching for a route that will test them to their physical limits as well as a family out on a cycling daytrip. There are so many places to visit in Dartmoor – the largest and wildest area of open country in southern England– and the best way to do it is on bike. As such, 1 South West has provided you with all the information you could need in one place, just visit our interactive map.
