Ballet Classes For Toddlers
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

The toddler years are an important time in a child's development. By this time the child is walking, learning how to go potty in the toilet and often becoming highly proficient in exercising his or her will. Many little ones have spent the majority of their lives in the limited company of family members and close family friends. They often have no idea just how big the world outside the stroller really is or how many opportunities to learn and grow await them.

These years pass quickly. Before you know it your cherub-cheeked prince or princess will be off to the first day of kindergarten; an activity completely independent from Mommy and Daddy and all things familiar. Have you done all you can to prepare your child for that big day?

If your toddler has a timid nature it might benefit him or her to get involved in a "Mommy and Me" style program. This will allow the child to observe a classroom setting from the safety of Mommy's lap. And also to see that a teacher is not a scary stranger but someone who wants to help them and encourage them to learn something new.

I highly recommend ballet class for your shy son or daughter.

Mommy and Me style ballet classes are usually 30 minutes in length and meet once or twice weekly. Classes are usually kept small, no more than ten children, so as to maintain a teachable environment. The benefit of the Mommy and Me style class is that the teacher can direct Mommy and then Mommy can direct the child. In time the little one will begin to see that it is good to follow the teacher's directions. Shy toddlers rarely receive direction from people they do not know.

A ballet class designed for toddlers might consist of six to ten ballet fundamentals to be practiced and mastered over a period of time. To keep the mood fun and light for the little ones, the instructor might alter the terminology by replacing the correct names of steps with describing phrases. For example a plie might become a "bend and straight" or a glissade could be called an "out and in step". Instead of arm positions of low, middle and high fifth, we might say "rock your baby", "make a pizza" and "a sunshine high in the sky". The setting must be age-appropriate, orderly and consistent in order for your shy toddler to feel protected and be willing to participate. The child will begin to engage and learn if he or she senses that the environment is safe. Mommy will be there every step of the way to encourage the process.

A Mommy and Me style toddler ballet class might be just what's needed to help your timid little one to be prepared for the next stages of life. As a shy child begins to realize that they can successfully learn to do new things, their confidence begins to grow. Your shy son or daughter will slowly but surely begin to realize that classrooms are good and that teachers help them to learn and become successful. The shyness may not fade completely, but the confidence will continue to grow. To see a shy child blossom into a confident child is by far, one of the world's most beautiful sights. And it can all start with ballet class.
