Ballroom Dancing As Exercise

Do you exercise? Our doctors always tell us to, but it always seems to be hard to find the time and the motivation to do it. We need something that's easy to remember to do because it's so much fun, you look forward to it when you get up in the morning. I vote for dancing. Dancing makes great exercise. It’s the best exercise I know of, and it’s the only exercise I do!

Dancing, the best whole body workout

The reason dance makes the perfect workout is because it works all of the muscle groups in your body at the same time. I remember when I was starting out as an instructor, I would get tired and winded pretty quickly. Dancing works your arms and hands, your legs and feet, your torso and mid-section, and your back and neck all at the same time. The best dancers spend hours and hours making each one of those muscle groups do exactly what they want them to do, and then, when they perform, it’s the most intense calorie burning 2 minutes you could ever hope to get.

Good music = fun

And, what better way to get your exercise by doing something fun like dancing! Dancing raises endorphins like running does for some people, but there is also a lot to be said for the MUSIC. Music is good for you. Music makes you feel better if you’re in a bad mood. There are so many songs out there! You can pick a different one for each dance. You can find new songs, and when you find one you like, you’ll like it that much more when you dance to it. Or, you can just put on your favorite song and give new meaning to the term ‘rock out’.

Work your body, work your brain

Dancing to music even makes you more intelligent. Studies have shown that listening to music opens up neural pathways that make your brain work better. Not only that, dancing makes you even smarter by activating both halves of your brain at the same time by moving both halves of your body at the same time. This creates cross-connecting neural pathways that make you smarter and make life easier. Then, to top it off, dancing with a partner works the socio-emotional parts of your brain, too, so your brain gets as much of a workout as your body does!

So, don’t just exercise, DANCE!
