Learn Styles of Hip Hop Dance

Hip hop dance is a lot like many other styles of dance. With all other styles of dance, you will find different styles within that genre of dance. With ballroom dancing for example, you will find different styles of ballroom dancing; swing, tango, samba, waltz, etc. And you will even find different styles within those styles (ex. cross step waltz, peruvian waltz, international standard waltz, etc.) Dancing is almost literally a living thing that changes with time. Hip hop, out of all the dance styles, has probably seen the most changes within a short amount of time. Unlike many other styles of dance, hip hop embraces new styles that come along, but still holds true to the traditional styles that created it. Among the first styles of hip hop dance to come along were popping, locking, and b-boying (popping and locking actually came about before hip hop music did).

From these three main styles of hip hop, tons of other styles have branched off still made of some of the basics held within those original three. The purpose of this article is to help you find which style suits you and what you want to work towards.

Now, I'm not going to attempt to list all of the styles with a description of each because you probably wouldn't finish the article due to the length. But what I will do is list the main hip hop styles with a brief description of each, and what to do to learn it. If you don't find a style in this article you want to settle with, don't worry! I'll have more articles coming soon to describe some of the other popular styles of hip hop dance. Videos and other information you find online will help you to learn styles of hip hop dance.

B-Boying

B-boying or as many call it "breakdancing" is a very acrobatic and physically demanding dance style. It involves; toprock, which is footwork standing up that usually sets you into floor moves, floorwork, which are moves done on the floor (obviously), power moves, the more acrobatic and stylish moves involving a lot of motion and strength, and freezes, which come usually at the end of a b-boy set involving the freezing of the body in, more often then not, gravity defying illusions. If this style is one you want to learn then find classes in your area that teach this style, look up videos online, and look up more information online. Oh, and don't forget to PRACTICE!

Popping

Popping is a style thats basics have become the roots for many other hip hop styles. This style involves flexing certain parts of the body creating hits or stops. The style uses a lot of isloation of different parts through out the body. Tracing and waving is another aspect of popping that give the illusion that there is something moving through you. All this is done to the beats and lyrics of a song to create some awesome moves. Popping has given way to many other styles of hip hop like tutting, waving, liquid, turfing, and tons of others. If you want to learn this style of dance then be prepared for some awkward and frustrated moments. I tell you this not to detour you, but to let you know that all have gone through those times, even the best of dancers. Do the same things I listed above, especially PRACTICE!

Locking

Locking is a fun and grooving style that uses a lot of attitude. It's a very traditional style that actually orginated to funk music, not hip hop. It involves "locking" certain parts of the body while the rest is moving. Facial expressions, pointing, and lots of floorwork are all happening in this style of dance. The style involves a lot of energy as most of the moves are large and exaggerated. If you feel your energy level and love for grooving can meet the standards for this style then go for it! There are some great videos online that you can watch and practice from.

No Limits

If you are seeking to learn styles of hip hop dance, then this article has given you some of the basics you need to start your journey. Only a fraction of what is out there has been given here, but it's enough for you to start out. In my opinion, a true hip hop dancer isn't one who assigns himself to one specific style, but seeks to learn as many as he/she can. Of course, there are styles that suit individuals more then others, and I encourage you to take that style and master it. But don't just stop at that style! You'll be suprised how much more you'll grow as you put time and effort into other styles of hip hop also. So remember, PRACTICE and research styles of hip hop through video tutorials, classes and websites, and as you do you'll be on your way to becoming an amazing dancer. You'll see results sooner then you think. Good luck!
