Dance In Pointe Shoes - How To Be Ready
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

Most ballet students have the goal to one day, dance in pointe shoes. But many students worry because they do not know how to ready when the assessment time comes. Will they be picked to start pointe classes, or will they be left behind. And when a teacher says "you need to be stronger" what does that mean?

You have been working as hard as you can yet your feet, your ballet turnout, your ballet positions just do not look the same as they do on someone else.

It is always painfully obvious in ballet classes as to who the better and stronger students are. Even when the atmosphere is not intensely competitive, and when the teachers are sensitive about the degree of talent involved in each students work, it is plain to tell if you are one who chose ballet, but "ballet did not choose you".

Get An Edge On Your Competition - Learn How To Be Ready

Find out the essential factors that you need to improve upon:

  • how to increase ballet turnout
  • how to increase the flexibility of stiff ankles
  • how to increase the function of tiny foot muscles
  • how to strengthen key ballet positions and improve your balance

Although you are working hard, paying attention, and sweating away in every ballet class, you may not be targeting the exact muscles that will refine a particular movement or position. For instance, if you get muscle cramps or aches after a series of pirouettes, is it weak calf muscles or weak feet? Or is there strain because your upper body is not held securely?

While most ballet teachers try to keep track of every individual in class, and their personal corrections and progress, it is almost impossible to do so in larger classes. Teachers appreciate students who work hard and concentrate, but they know that certain aspects of ballet will take years to improve if a student has less of the ideal ballet body to work with.

Learn Daily Foot Exercises - Speed Your Progress

There are special exercises, pre pointe exercises, that are not ballet barre movements. The battement tendus and degages that are repeated so much in the barre workout strengthen the feet. Yet, you can do more. The tiny sole of the foot muscles can be activated and strengthened.

Here is one example, and it is easy to picture: "playing the piano" with your toes. Sit on a chair comfortably, and place your feet flat on the floor. Lift the toes, keeping the feet level on the floor. Then put down the big toe, the next, and the next and so forth. Then lift the little toe, then the next, etc.

This sounds simple. You will find that at first your toes do not move separately from each other that easily. But they will. Work up to repeating this twenty times a day.

There is a whole body of pre pointe exercises you can learn to increase your ballet turnout and be ready to dance in pointe shoes.
