Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

Hip Hop is a culture that has taken this world by storm. Since the late 80's and onward, hip hop has developed from an underground music genre, to something you hear and see everywhere. The dance style known as hip hop has been around just as long as the music genre has and it's influences have penetrated almost every corner of the world. The extremely unique dance style has been widely deemed the prefered dance style of this generation.

It's everywhere! From music videos to T.V. and movies, and many people have the same question, Where can I learn how to hip hop dance? Well, there's many avenues and paths you can take to become a great hip hop dancer, but I felt like I could share with you the course that has proved effective for me in learning this amazing dance style.

You may be wondering why I feel like I can offer an educated perspective on this topic. Well to start, I've been dancing almost all my life. I have a strong passion for dance, and especially hip hop. I have been to classes upon classes and have learned from some of the best, but also have come away from certain experiences feeling it may have been time unwisely used. So in order to save you any unwasted time, Ill give you some quick helpful hints, sound good?

Choose Your Style

First off, there are tons and I mean TONS of styles of hip hop out there. It seems there's always some new trendy style that hits the streets almost every month. I wouldn't focus your chosen style on any random style that you find interesting. Try many of them out. Go to youtube, and start with certain styles that interest you, and work from there. From practicing, you may start to see what your body is more suited towards. For instance, if you have a flare for footwork and acrobatics, and consider yourself pretty strong, breakdancing would be perfect for you. If isolating certain parts of your body comes quite easy and you can flex different body parts like no ones business, then you may be well suited for popping. There's countless styles out there so choose one and PRACTICE it! A LOT!

Take Dance Classes

For me personally, I have been taking dance classes ever since I was 6 and I am so grateful for that. You see I have a lot of friends who claim to be freestylers, and when it comes to dancing at the flick of a hat, they got it down. They just dance from what comes to their mind, and it looks sick. But when it comes to being taught sets or routines of choreographed dance moves, they are back to the basics. What I am saying is, don't limit yourself to just practicing freestyle, learn choreography too. If you want to be a great dancer, you NEED to be able to pick up choreography. The same principle works for choreography cats. If all you can do is pickup choreography, but can't freestyle, then you need to practice and improve. Being able to do both choreography and freestyle is essentail if you are wanting to become a great dancer.

Work the Secret...PRACTICE!

If you want to be a great dancer, you have to practice. Practice all the time! You can be at school or work and still be going over moves and sets in your head. If you are literally passionate about dance, then thinking about and practicing dance all the time doesn't come as a chore. It is something that makes you, you. I promise you that as you practice freestyle, take classes and brush up on your choreography, and choose the style of hip hop you feel suits you and keep practicing it, then you will be well on your way to becoming a great dancer. And just a heads up, if you have no way to of finding dancers you can learn from, then watch youtube! Youtube literally has thousands of tutorials and videos that can help you in your quest to becoming a great dancer. Also by visiting my website you'll be given information and guides to further learning how to hip hop dance.

Remember, hip hop is a way to show how you feel and to express beliefs and emotions. Don't get so caught up with trying to impress others, but more so seek the opportunity of letting dance changed you as person and become your outlet for expressing who you are. You will actually improve a lot more this way then just learning dance to impress others. Good luck with your journey to becoming a great hip hop dancer.
