What is Hip Hop Dance About?
Hip hop dance is much more then a dance style that's been around for 30 years. It's a movement and a unique style of dance that has come through a diverse culture, a culture that has something to say. To me hip hop and the dance style that has resulted from it is so much more then anything you may see on T.V. or hear about. As with all dance styles, it is a way to express who you are and what you feel.
The media has often protrayed hip hop as a culture that glorifies crime, violence, and immorality. Hip hop although was born in an area where all these things were prevelant, they only describe the environment in which this culture was created, not what hip hop is about. For many, hip hop was a way to escape that environment not a means to embrace it. And although hip hop dance is one of those channels that people used to express themselves, hip hop also brought about self expression through art, speech, and music.
When you decide to learn hip hop dance, try to remember what it's all about. It's not about impressing your friends, about showing someone you're better than them, or any of the other countless reasons many learn hip hop dance. It's about coming to know who you are, and being able to express who you are and what you feel to others. The feelings may be love, aggression, hate, joy, or sadness. They result from what you've experienced in your life, and can be expressed through hip hop dance. Don't worry about where you come from, what color your skin is, or what other diverse factors make you, you. Hip hop dance isn't intended to segregate, but to unite. Although we all come from different walks of life, we all still have something to say. So say it!
Now that you have a slight understanding of what hip hop dance may be about, learn it! Learn hip hop dance, and develop that same passion that I have come to develop. As you practice, and practice some more, you will slowly begin to understand more how hip hop dance will be an amazing channel to express who you are. It's all down to the individual. If you are reading this and want to learn more about hip hop dance and how to learn it, I have provided my own advice on how you can do that. You'll learn more than you could dream, if you only put in the work and stay determined. Trust me, you'll be glad you did.
Great article. I've been into Hip-hop ever since I was small. Hip-hop to me is not just music or dance to me, it's a culture. A culture that celebrates diversity and individuality through style. I've been involved with hip-hop dancing since 2005, particularly popping and bboying and these dances have enriched my life. I was a member of a dance crew called "Clockwork" from 2007-2010. My crew have performed many shows, corporate events, competitions and even a few gigs on TV, one of the most memorable was our performance on "Australia's Got Talent." Keep up the good work!
