Sos: Lost Data

Today I opened a document in Microsoft Word (a book review that I was poised to publish, barring the odd alteration to a sentence or two) and when attempting to modify this document the screen went blank. I suppose the right thing to have done at that point was to go to edit>undo but I didn't.

I was frankly mystified; I'd already suffered a shock last week-end when my lap top suddenly refused to respond and I had a rather depressing 24 hours of concern until a friend here had diagnosed a problem with the battery. Relief!

In these 24 hours, it gave me the chance to reflect on how much we tend to rely on our little machines. Just over a year ago, my old PC caught a virus and the same thing occurred, without warning. I lost, not just some precious writings but all my email addresses, passwords and stuff I can't (or don't want to) re-call.

It brought back the same memories: It was like having brain surgery where a large part of my existence had been removed and I had the same situation last weekend, albeit for just a day or so, zombie state.

I do tend to back-up things on an external H/D but I have to admit I'm a little lax on this. Luckily at that time, some of my old email addresses were stored on a greetings card web site so I was very grateful for that at least.

So back to this morning. I opened the document, consisting of some 1000 words or thereabouts and as soon as I tried to add some words the screen went blank, immediately, no warning, no: "Are you sure you want to ditch this couple of hours of your creative thinking?"

No - nothing, zilch.

Then I tried system restore, which I wouldn't normally go anywhere near and have it disabled (although it seemed to have re-abled itself today by itself - curious?) Negative result anyway.

So, I searched and I searched, through the usual channels and I could find this 19.5 kb file easily but with the same result - blank page.

Now obviously it has to be somewhere on my hard drive but where? I even checked the re-cycle bin in case, but again, no.

I spent hours on the internet, trawling through the Microsoft (soft in the head?) "support" which. as usual had me going round and round and rou....what?? Oh, yes!

Sorry about that, just nodded off, you see.

I even down-loaded a recovery programme and, needless to say, re-cycled that in no time.

Point is, I'm a bit nervous now about writing any articles, if they can just disappear in smoke before my eyes. I always save, save, save as I'm writing but on this occasion, I'm writing direct onto Street Articles just as a precaution and will opt to save any future stuff as a draft; at least that way, I know it's out there somewhere.

I'd advise anyone else to do the same thing.

Meanwhile, if any of you folks have a possible answer to this bizarre problem, perhaps you could let me know, so I can avoid it in future.

Many thanks.

I use an external had drive that I carry in my back pack. I also use a gmail account where I have access to 8GB of document storage. Leaving important stuff up there means I can access from anywhere even if I don't have my laptop with me. Agree with the guys emailing stuff to yourself is also a life saver. Fortunately I haven't had your problem but I do try to cover the possibility.

Hi James, yes I also have an external H/D but this event took me completely by surprise! Thanks for your comment though.

I agree with Cynthia's idea. I have mailed myself stuff to save many times. I use a Web based e mail, so everything is saved out there on the web.

I'd pick up my laptop and take it to a hardcore geek. If that doesn't solve the problem, I'd get an automatic backup external hard drive. If it is the mischief of a virus, try Invisus. Those people are great and well worth the 100 bucks a year. I think they service France, why not? If that doesn't work, get a Mac. So sorry you're having this problem. Aggravating.

I can sympathise with your feelings. It's happened to me also and I always say why don't I save things more often.

Hi John, in this case I did save but to no avail - very odd.

Kim, Computers deliver disappointments, don't they? When you're doing MS-Word files that are important to you, but not confidential material, here's a solution. May seem kind of dumb, but sometimes it can save you a big headache. Email your document to yourself! Then just leave it in cyberspace for a bit. For your articles, you'll get them published. Then you can delete the email of any draft(s). blessings, Cynthia blessings, Cynthia

You're welcome. Born of destroying versions of files as simply as overwriting them:-)

If you remember and have made a title to the document then do a system search by entering that title in the "Search programs and files" box...it located just above the "start" button in Win 7 and most other operating systems.....other words in the document like the title of the book you were reviewing could be entered the same way....not sure how if this is a Mac...Had the very same thing happen to me yesterday but lost the information due to power outage in my area...my text editor has an auto save but unfortunately only had the first few paragraphs were saved on a near complete article....had to start over but like you suggest I save more often now....hope your document turns up...

Hi Kevin, I've never found the search facility very useful. As I said, I could locate the file, all 19.5 kbs of it but no article so I've re-written it but as Heather says below, it's never as good the second time. I'm on XP by the way.

Oh how frustrating Kim. I would be so upset to lose creative thought. It's never the same the second time! We had a lot more computer problems before we changed over to apple. I actually can't think of a single system crash, software conflict or virus since. I know that's not the point of your article but I can't help rejoice in the benefits it's brought us!

Hi Kim. Could you remember if you've pressed Ctrl+A? Another thing to avoid this problem is to disable "Typing replaces selection" (Tools | Options | Edit) in your MS Word. Microsoft system restore does not help here since it only restores the system files and not your personal documents.

Thanks Lemuel, I'll try what you suggest.

I can't help either, Kim. I'm not a computer person. I have had weird things happen that I never could figure out.
