Although choosing a memorial will never be a happy affair, but it is an important job as we all want our loved ones to live on in some form. We can at least derive some solace from the memorials that there is some remembrance of our dear ones. Marble is easy to carve which makes it an ideal choice for many different kinds of memorials. Before we delve into the different choices, let us find out a bit more about the stone itself.

When limestone is compressed and exposed to heat, it turns into its metamorphic form, marble. Marble is found naturally as a result of the compression of millions of years, this rock is then quarried and refined for commercial use. Marble is primarily composed of calcite and dolomite. Since calcite is white, when more amount of calcite is present in the marble, it acquires the pristine whiteness for which it is so famous; the white variety of marble is used for marble memorials.

Marble has always been a popular choice as it is very easy to work with. Craftsmen have been known to carve beautiful creations out of this amazing stone, Michelangelo has left behind great many of his creations in marble for the world to admire. Since it can be chiselled easily, one can carve very intricate designs on it. When you are thinking of getting a marble memorial made, there are a lot of options in hand. Here are a few.

Headstones- These are the most common form of memorials used by people today. It is subtle, and yet you can infuse a lot of creativity into it with the kinds of designs, shapes and words you choose to put into it.

Kerb sets- These are a more extended version of the headstone. They not only have a marker at the head of the grave, but also extend to cover the whole length of the grave. You can put your little message in the headstone portion along with the details of the deceased. The rest can be either solid tabletop design or hollowed out. This hollowed space can then be filled with stone chips of different colours, which look good against the white background.

Urns- Those who have chosen cremation can be remembered with this type of marble memorial. The urns can be beautifully carved to a unique design, holding the remains of your loved one and placed in a special corner of your house. This way, your dear ones will always stay close to you.
