Landmark Supreme Court Decision

In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court has ruled that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (commonly referred to as “Obamacare”) is upheld as constitutional. The debate about this piece of legislation has gone on for a long time and will continue to do so even after the ruling because many opponents claim that it is a move towards socialism in the United States. Nonetheless, for many people this is a relief because it means an end to the everyday struggle to cover medical bills for patients with pre-existing conditions.

Helping the Poor Survive

Millions of people in the United States are without health insurance, which poses a huge problem for the medical system. People without insurance who have emergencies are forced to spend years paying back the bills, while others incur credit card and payday loan debt just so that they can pay the health costs and keep their family afloat.

The Affordable Care Act is an effort to remove these problems for urban poor who cannot afford to pay for healthcare at all times. Many of them fall into a nasty payday loan cycle because they can only protect their loved ones from health issues by getting more debt.

Pre-Existing Conditions

The best part about the Supreme Court’s decision is that many people with pre-existing health conditions will not be left in the lurch as they used to be. Insurance companies treated patients with pre-existing health conditions very poorly because they cost them a lot of money and hurt profits for private companies.

Today is hopefully the first step in providing these patients with the healthcare that they need in order to survive. Many of them are deep in debt because they can’t afford to cover the bills for their medical treatment.

This is perhaps the worst part about private insurance companies in the United States. Treatments that elderly and sickly people need are so harmful to their finances even when it is not their fault that they became sick in the first place.

Although the decision was close, the Affordable Care Act has been upheld. Hopefully this will change the way that insurance is used in the United States so that poor people can get health care without incurring payday loan debt which many people get into due to financial strains. Helping patients with pre-existing health conditions avoid the payday loan cycle that can be incurred since so many people turn to payday loans now will also be another positive outcome from this landmark decision.

We have the national health service in the UK and although we grumble about waiting ques etc they do provide a service that all can use poor included. It is by no means perfect but having attended the ER a few times recently with my Mother when she fell I am thankful it is in place. Hopefully this change to US policy will benefit a lot of people.

I don't think I have ever hear anyone say great things about their care ;-) But I glad I have it when I need it. As for your mom hope she is better.

What about the people who will be taxed to the point they can't pay their own bills?

You only pay tax on your earnings so it will be balanced.

I think this will help a lot of people. It will be a great help if it stops people from using emergency rooms as their primary care doctor.

It will help millions of people for sure Steve. How do you think it will stop people from using the ER as their primary care doctor though?

I suspect this will help me and many others in a variety of ways. However, there are parts I feel are deeply disturbing. For example, all my children are in heaven because they died in my womb. Now I'll be forced to contribute to killing children. So I've joined my church in a 2 week prayer for our country.

I am very sorry to hear that Cynthia. There are pros and cons to everything our government does.

Great article. I also agree that it is a pretty huge step in the right direction. Definitely looking forward to how it's going to impact the country in the long run.

I am too, its been a major issue for quite some time now so well see how it pans out. I know too well how having a pre existing condition can cost you a fortune even if you can get insurance.

I think this is only a good thing. The only people who are complaining are doing so because they are so partisan that anything the democrats could say "would be wrong", they cannot read well enough to understand the benefits of this system to "society", or they have enough money that it does not impact them.

I have to agree with you here, it is a good thing for millions of people who can't get the help they need in regards to medical care.

As you say this is a landmark ruling. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. Being used to a totally different system - I appreciate how good it is to get the majority of care that one needs. A very interesting article - thanks
