Education (and higher education in particular) often teaches a number of useful skills in life, but fails to inform students on the benefits of good negotiating skills. No matter what you choose to do in life, negotiation will be a requirement to be successful. Whether you need to negotiate your way out of a traffic ticket or just coming up with a payday loan debt settlement, the art of negotiation is required in your daily lives. Sometimes you may even need to be able to negotiate with your significant other!
Friendly Negotiations
No matter how good of friends you are with someone, you will still argue with them occasionally. Sometimes you may even argue often, but you will need to know how to negotiate the argument with friends so that you do not lose a valuable relationship. Although these personal relationships may not seem as important as many of the practical uses for negotiating skills, you never know when you are going to need a real friend to help you out. Make sure you know how to win an argument gracefully and lose when you need to. Every relationship is give-and-take and you must know when to do both.
Negotiating on a Practical Level
On a practical level, learning to negotiate can help to save you a lot of money. When buying a house you will most definitely use the help of a realtor, however the negotiations are up to you. If you do not want to increase the price you buy or decrease when you sell, they have to follow what you say. That means that making huge decisions about your finances are well within your own power to be victorious. The same holds true for other items such as cars and even when you negotiate a salary with a future employer.
Learning how to negotiate with people will definitely help save you money throughout your life. Although most schools will not teach you the finer points of negotiation, it is something that you can definitely use. You may have too many credit cards and want to negotiate a better rate. You may also find yourself negotiating payday loan debt consolidation or trying to get a payday loan debt settlement if you have payday loans, but you will never be able to do so without negotiating skills. Even when you are struggling to survive, you will need to maintain a level of negotiating skills. For people who have few options, being able to negotiate may be the only way out.
I know huh? I have about 20 in the last week or so to get done. It was tough.
Great article and so true. Most people often just fight to make their point, but never negotiate to win a battle.
Thats actually spot on. If you argue you can be blinded by that anger and lose. But when you negotiate you have a drawn out plan either in your head or on paper sometimes and can actually get what you want.
