Welcome to the second installment of this four-part article series on what can be done about 10 of the really common dental problems that typically affect us. Previously, in Part 1, a dentist in Pueblo CO explained what you should do in the event you have:
• Toothache: Floss your teeth and rinse with salt water. If the pain doesn’t go away within three days, book an appointment with the dentist.
• Cavities: Tiny holes in your teeth caused by bacteria need to be professionally treated and this can usually be done in a painless procedure using dental fillings. Cavities do not go away on their own! They can eventually lead to tooth loss if left without treatment.
Let’s take a look at another three common dental problems…
Common Dental Problem # 3: Stained Teeth
A diet rich in foods and beverages that contain dark pigments, tannins and dyes can leave your smile looking dulled and discolored after many years of repeated exposure. Smoking, chewing tobacco and even certain medications can also darken your dental enamel. The good news is that there are many approaches one can take to improving the appearance of your smile, but prevention is the most important.
“Don’t smoke, maintain good oral hygiene and try to minimize the amount of dark sodas, beverages and coffee you consume and you should be able to preserve your beautiful white, healthy smile,” says one dental implant surgeon in Pueblo. “If the damage has already been done, a professional teeth whitening treatment offers a quick, simple and inexpensive way you can totally revolutionize the appearance of your smile.”
Speak to your dentist about in-office and at-home professional teeth whitening kits to find out which option suits you best.
Common Dental Problem # 4: Chipped/Cracked Teeth
All it takes is one silly accident for a tooth to become cracked or chipped. This kind of damage can also be done by using your teeth as tools to open containers, or while eating popcorn and ice. Fortunately, any skilled dentist in Pueblo CO can repair a surface chip or crack.
“We will first take an X-ray of the damaged tooth to ensure that the trauma is restricted to the enamel and dentine and not the pulp chamber. If it is only a surface chip, we can bond some strong filling material to replace the missing dental enamel and reinforce the tooth structure. If the pulp chamber has been compromised, we may opt for root canal therapy and a crown or dental veneer. Either way, our goal is to restore the strength, function and appearance of the damaged tooth,” explains the dental implant dentist in Pueblo.
Common Dental Problem # 5: Impacted Wisdom Teeth
As our species has evolved, our jaws have become smaller and smaller in response to our changing diets. Consequently, there is less space available to accommodate our wisdom teeth, which typically emerge in our early adulthood. It’s for this reason that wisdom teeth often become impacted, or trapped behind or under the second molars or jawbone. If this problem isn’t addressed through the surgical removal of the wisdom teeth, it can cause a variety of painful and damaging problems for patients.
Wisdom teeth removal is a standard procedure and one that is completed in under an hour in most Pueblo CO dentists’ office. While recovery isn’t wholly pleasant, one week’s worth of discomfort can save you from months or even years of complicated dental problems and even dangerous and excruciating oral abscesses! Not everyone’s wisdom teeth cause him or her problems, but it’s a good idea to have a dentist X-ray your jaw to determine whether you can expect to have them out or not.
