Welcome to the second half of this two-part article series on the wonderfully versatile cosmetic treatment that is dental veneers. Previously, in Part 1, a Colorado Springs cosmetic dentist explain what veneers are and the various cases they can be used to successfully treat. Now we want to explore the procedure involved in getting dental veneers placed, so without further ado, let’s get started…
Getting Veneers: What To Expect
A Colorado Springs cosmetic dentist will typically place your veneers and this takes place over the course of three dental visits:
First Visit: During your initial consultation with the cosmetic dentist, he or she will take a good look at your teeth and make sure that you are indeed a candidate for veneers. If you have any serious oral health problems, these will need to be addressed before you can simply be signed up for a cosmetic procedure. If you are determined to be in good oral health and a good candidate for the treatment, a date will be set for your second consultation.
Second Visit: During your second appointment with your Colorado Springs cosmetic dentist, your teeth will be prepared to accommodate the thickness of the veneers. Since the veneers are already very thin, only a thin layer of enamel will be shaved off the front surface of your teeth. This is necessary so that your teeth don’t end up looking too bulky.
More modern dental veneer treatments don’t require enough enamel to be removed to necessitate anesthesia, but whether you will be requiring this or not will be discussed with you in detail beforehand. A mold will then be made of your teeth so that the veneers can be exactly custom made to fit over them. Your final appointment will then be made.
Final Visit: Once your custom veneers have been made for you, you will return to the cosmetic dentist to have them bonded or cemented to the front of the tooth or teeth you require restored. And that’s it!
- A completely restored and beautiful, natural looking smile.
- Teeth that have been restored with veneers are virtually indistinguishable from natural, healthy teeth.
- You can select the color of your new veneers, so however white and bright you want your smile to be; it’s your choice!
- Restored and reinforced teeth that are less vulnerable to erosion, wear and further deterioration.
- Reduced risk of tooth decay caused by food and bacteria trapped in the small spaces between skew and gappy teeth.
- Veneers can also be used to change the size and shape of teeth, so if you have always had small teeth, for example, this can be improved upon.
Additionally, veneers are typically composed of ceramic materials that are resistant to staining, so once you’ve had them placed they are unlikely to become stained and discolored throughout their lifetime.
The One Downside of Veneers
“Once you’ve had dental veneers placed, the process cannot be reversed,” explains a Colorado Springs veneers specialist. “That’s the one downside of the procedure, however, if you weigh it up against the alternatives – living with a deteriorated smile and teeth that are vulnerable to decay and further damage – this could hardly be considered a downside at all. And if you look after your veneers and avoid really hard, crunchy foods, you could maintain your beautiful new smile for 10 years or more!”
