Cosmetic Dentistry

Dentistry is a centuries-old practice, with evidence showing that dental procedures for decayed teeth were performed as far back as 7000 B.C. Cosmetic dentistry, which aims at improving the appearance of a person’s teeth and smile, seems to have found its beginnings with the Etruscans in the 7th and 6th centuries B.C.

The Etruscans were an ancient Italian civilization, and were a highly industrialized, artistic and intelligent people. Archeological evidence has shown that they were more advanced than other civilizations of their time in the area of dentistry as a whole, and cosmetic dentistry in particular.

Fast forward a few centuries and cosmetic dentistry has come a long way. What once filled the gaps where a person had missing teeth were other people’s teeth, or even ox teeth. These substitute teeth were held in place by the use of gold bands, intricately woven between the adjacent teeth for stabilization and aesthetics. Today, dentists have many options at their disposal for improving the appearance of a person’s teeth.

Whether the dental problem is stained, chipped or cracked teeth; missing, misshapen or decayed teeth, modern technology for cosmetic dentistry can make almost anyone’s smile look amazing. Some of the options available to today’s dentists are bleaching, bonding, veneers, reshaping, implants, snap-on teeth fittings, orthodontics, bridges, partials, crowns, inlays and onlays, to name a few.

Cosmetic dentistry procedures can be very expensive, and due to the nature of the procedures, should only be done by a properly trained cosmetic dentist. If you are paying a lot of money to get a good looking set of teeth, you only want it done once, and you want it done right the first time.

Bleaching teeth to give them a whiter appearance is one of the most common procedures for cosmetic dentistry, and is the least invasive. It doesn't involve using any of the dental instruments usually associated with restorative dentistry, such as the dental drill.

The dentist will apply a bleaching solution to the teeth, which is then activated by either heat or light. Generally, 6 to 8 teeth are done at a time during each dental visit. Periodontic care may be required after the initial bleaching to keep the teeth looking white. It is possible that the teeth can discolor again if exposed to discoloring agents such as coffee or tobacco. Some patients have reported an increased sensitivity to cold during and after the bleaching process, but these sensitivities usually lessen or disappear after time goes by.

The process of implanting teeth to fill in spaces where teeth are missing has become more popular in the last few years with advances in implant dentistry. Generally, a titanium rod is fitted into the bone where the tooth was extracted, and allowed to settle while the bone fuses to the titanium. The titanium rod extending from the healed gum is then fitted with a tooth especially made for the individual. This process looks great asthetically and also prevents the process of bone loss which would otherwise have taken place in the gap left by the missing tooth.

Cosmetic dentists may use a combination of several procedures in improving the appearance of an individual's teeth. Usually, it is only the front teeth which are obvious in a person's smile, and the front top teeth are the key features to the smile. The best cosmetic dentists in Lauderhill would offer a free consultation so that you can find out what options are available to you and what it will cost. It is important to go over the details of what procedures will be required to give your smile the look that you want.
