Dental Sealants: What Are They And Why Should We Get Them
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

It is not uncommon for a dental professional to recommend that a child who has just received their 6-year molars or their 12-year molars to have dental sealants placed on their teeth. This is because it has been proven over many years that if a sealant is done correctly, it is capable of preventing decay. So what is a dental sealant and why should you get one?

A dental sealant is a protective covering that is placed over the grooves in healthy teeth. Normally the teeth that would receive this treatment would be the molar teeth that are located in the back of the mouth, but other teeth that may have grooves or pits in them could also benefit from a sealant. The sealant is made of a plastic-like (resin) material that starts out in liquid form then hardens after it is placed on the tooth. The liquid is able to flow deep into the grooves before it hardens. Dental professionals will recommend the placement of these protective coatings on teeth as soon as the teeth are fully erupted. They do this because the tooth has had the least amount of exposure to the bacteria that cause decay and they have the best chance of successfully preventing decay. There is a process that is involved in applying a dental sealant.

I have told you that the dental sealant has been proven to prevent cavities, but how does it do this? The molar teeth in the back of the mouth have a wide chewing surface that helps you to grind your food up. On the tops of these teeth, there are many "peaks" and "valleys". The "valleys" are where the sealant is placed because this is where most cavities start. These grooves (the "valleys") are a nice place for cavity causing bacteria to attach and breed. They breed because we feed them the carbohydrates that are the fuel for their survival. The bacteria consume the carbohydrates and release a waste product that is an acid. The acid is what causes the cavity to form in your tooth. This is why avoiding sugars and why brushing and flossing are so important.

Now what most people don't realize is that there is a "cavern" or an opening just below the "valley" of the tooth. Some teeth have larger caverns than others which makes them more susceptible to cavities. Unfortunately, you can only see this opening with a microscope or if the tooth was removed and sliced in half lengthwise. To give you an idea of how small the opening is...the diameter of one bristle of a toothbrush is more than double the size of the opening to this cavern. The opening is plenty large enough for the bacteria to get into though. So if one bristle is too big to clean out this area, then how are you supposed to prevent the tooth from getting decay? By placing a sealant. This is why dental sealants have been developed and are recommended.

Most insurance companies cover all or a portion of the cost of sealants, but if you do not have insurance, it is still a very good investment. Check with your dental office to see if there is a warranty on replacement should they fall out. If there is not at least a one year warranty, then you should consider a different office. This is because the highest chance of failure is within the first year.

I highly recommend the placement of sealants on the molar teeth or any other teeth that your dental professional feels needs it. There are no needles involved in the placement of sealants and if the child is cooperative, it will take little time to do. It is a wise investment and can save you from the cost and inconvenience of having to get a cavity filled, not to mention the fear and anxiety that goes along with it.
