Gingivitis is one of the most common periodontal diseases that affect nearly 50 percent adults in the U.S. The disease is especially common among smokers, pregnant women, and diabetics. In most cases, the condition is reversible. However, if gingivitis is left untreated, it may turn into a more serious infection called periodontitis which may lead to deterioration of gums and teeth.

What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is the inflammation of tissues characterized by redness and swelling of gums. Depending upon the severity of the condition, it may cause your gums to bleed when brushing or flossing. As one of the most common bacterial infection, it is a major cause of teeth loss among adults.

What Causes Gingivitis

Gingivitis is mainly caused by plaque. Plaque is a buildup of food debris and bacteria that develop in the exposed part of the teeth. It usually results from poor dental hygiene. Plaque that stays for more than 24 hours can harden and become tarter, leading to infection. If the condition remains untreated, it can cause the gums to separate from the teeth eventually, damaging soft tissues and bone supporting the teeth. As the infection progresses, you may even lose your teeth.

Who is at Risk of Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is mainly caused by poor oral hygiene that allows the bacteria and toxins to accumulate in the spaces between the teeth and gums. However, people with poor oral hygiene habits are at higher risk of developing the condition. Some other factors may also increase the risk of the disease. These factors include:

• Smoking or chewing tobacco that could weaken the gums’ capability to heal

• Hormonal changes during pregnancy and menopausecan cause the gums to become more susceptible to bacterial attacks

• Crooked or overlapping teeth may create spaces for plaque to accumulate

• Cancer treatment can make the person more vulnerable to infections

• Poor nutrition, such as diet high in carbohydrates and sugar can increase the plaque build-up

• Medications, such as anti-seizure drugs can promote gum diseases

Treatment of Gingivitis

Gingivitis treatment is intended to reduce gums’ inflammation. The condition can be managed by cutting back on smoking and foods causing plaque buildup. Other treatments may include deep cleaning and surgery.

Deep cleaning may comprise scaling, root planning, or laser. With the technique, the dentist may remove plaque and tartar to prevent gum inflammation. If your teeth and gums are too damaged to be cleaned with a non-surgical procedure, your oral surgeon may prescribe an oral surgery.

Gingivitis is a preventable oral problem. However, if you have been affected by the condition, you should immediately consult a dental practitioner to treat the problem.
