Something I found out about after doing a lot of digging around the net, was that teeth grinding at night is something affecting about 50% of folks in US alone.
Being from the UK myself, I know as much as that’s a lot of people bothered by this. Or at least according to the statistics.
What I didn’t know was it something I was doing too.
I only found out when I went to have a partial denture repaired when the technician told me about how the damage had happened.
It was getting to the stage where I was in the shop twice in the space of 2 months to have a repair done. Now I need to get a new one which will be more of an expense.
How it came about was because I was sleeping with it in. When you grind your teeth at night, it’s sort of a malocclusion that can cause it. (that’s a misalignment in your teeth).
The grinding only deteriorates your teeth. So as you can imagine with a partial denture it’s going to break it.
There’s nothing stronger than your own teeth. Which is why my parents were probably on at me to take care of them.
Funny thing was I never broke any until I tried to give up smoking. The amount I ate was unreal. Junk food too. Too many boiled sweets.
I still smoke yet because I gave up trying to give up after damaging 4 of my teeth.
Anyway, when I found out about the teeth grinding at night scenario I dug around the net to find out more about it.
Turns out that it’s called sleep bruxism.
The other thing that I was surprised at was that sleep bruxism can lead to a TMJ disorder.
For those that don’t know TMJ is a joint that connects your lower jaw to your head.
I don’t have a TMJ disorder but the affects of the damage that teeth grinding at night is quite similar to a TMJ disorder.
Not only that but the effects of it can cause migraines.
If I knew I was grinding my teeth at night a couple of years ago, I’d probably not have been on the medication for the migraine headaches that I was on, if that was the root cause of them stemming from teeth grinding at night.
The lesson here is when it comes to headaches, they can be caused by stress. I think that’s called tension headaches, but the other thing that a lot of folks don’t think about is their teeth.
Any sort of dental problem can attribute to that and grinding your teeth at night is one which I found out the expensive way can cause a lot of problems.
