Is There A Non Toxic And Effective Alternative To Toothpaste?
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

Why do we need a healthy alternative to toothpaste? After all, if our dentists are recommending that we use toothpaste, it must be in our best interest, right? Well-meaning as our trusted health care practitioners are, the answer to that question is a resounding “NO”. Many recent studies have shown that the ingredients in most of the name brand toothpastes are detrimental to our health.

Toothpastes contain chemicals that are toxins.

Simply look at the ingredient label on any top selling toothpaste brand. It will look something like this:

sodium lauryl sulfate, trisodium phosphate, sodium phosphate, sodium fluoride, titanium dioxide, sodium hydroxide, FD&C Blue 1, sorbitol and sodium saccharin, cellulose gum

Sounds yummy, doesn’t it? This ingredient list sounds like a science experiment. I don’t know about you, but if I cannot pronounce the name of an ingredient, it is NOT going in or on my body. Have you ever wondered why there is a “do not swallow” warning on the label? Sodium hydroxide, used in every name brand whitening toothpaste, is the same active ingredient in drain cleaner. Sodium lauryl sulfate is another ingredient in name brand toothpaste (as well as the majority of other personal care products). SLS, as it is commonly referred, is linked in many studies to organ toxicity and cancer. Fluoride is touted as the holy grail of tooth decay prevention since 1955. So much so, that most cities in the U.S. deliberately add the chemical to their water supply. What we are not told is that fluoride, a by-product of the aluminum manufacturing process, is as toxic (or more so) than lead.

The benefits do not outweigh the risks.

Why, on earth would anyone knowingly use oral hygiene products that contain dangerous chemicals? For decades, we’ve been told (brainwashed) that the small amounts of chemicals used in these products are within “safety” guidelines and that the benefits of these ingredients outweigh the risks. The media and the large corporations that manufacture these products perpetuate that absurd notion. They would have us think that the only way to healthy gums and teeth is a chemically laden path. Surely, we can’t be that gullible.

A healthy mouth pH is key to optimal oral health.

The term pH refers to the acid/alkaline balance in the body. It is measured on a scale of 5.0 (acidic) to 8.0 (alkaline). The more acidic the body, the faster it degenerates. The mouth is no exception. A healthy pH for the mouth is 7.0 (neutral) or higher. At this measurement tooth decay does not exist. How does one achieve and maintain the ideal oral pH level? Eating well has much to do with it. It only makes sense that the more sugar and other acidic foods we consume, the more acidic our mouth will be. The other factor in the equation is our choice of oral hygiene products. I would argue that using chemicals (toxins) to clean our teeth is not a healthy option. Luckily, more and more holistic and biological dentists are coming forward to renounce the “benefits” of chemical based oral hygiene products in favor of natural and safe alternatives to toothpaste.

A blend of natural ingredients is a safe and effective alternative to toothpaste.

Wouldn’t it be nice to know that we can have optimal oral health by using a synergistic blend of natural substances? A healthy and safe option does, indeed, exist. Mother nature created many miraculous substances such as essential oils, salt and coconut oil, that alkalize, cleanse and fight bacteria phenomenally well. When blended together, these powerful ingredients cleanse and nourish the teeth and gums, while alkalizing the mouth. This is a simple, safe and effective alternative to toothpaste. Finally - tooth decay prevention with no warning labels needed!

Great article and information that needs to get out there! I was brushing my teeth in Bi-carb soda which was good. Now I'm using magnesium oil which is great! My teeth are clean 24/7, white (even though I'm a coffee drinker) and the tartar is disappearing all by itself. I'm not a heavy flosser so was surprised that now when I floss there is absolutely no bleeding. Testament to the health of my gums improving since using the oil. Magnesium is essential to our bodies and teeth. It's not a great taste but even my children now use it without complaint so it can't be that bad. They've noticed a difference in the feeling of their teeth too and they're 11 and 8. Keep up the promotion of this good stuff. I'm with you that we shouldn't put anything on or in our bodies that we don't want to negatively affect us.
