Oil Pulling For Dental Health

What is oil pulling for dental health?

This is a very simple process that will only take up to 20 minutes of your time. The reason I'm writing about it is because I have been oil pulling each morning for the last several months and it has worked for me. Keep in mind, everyone is different and will have different results. However, I have noticed improved dental health and I know it's working when my dentist asks me, "What are you doing differently?" after telling me my teeth look great and I have no cavities.

First, you must choose the oil you are going to use to oil pull. The most popular ones are sunflower, sesame, coconut, or olive. I use organic coconut oil because I know all the health benefits and I don't mind the taste of it. Basically, first thing in the morning before breakfast or coffee, I will relax on the couch, watch the news, and do my swishing of oil inside my mouth. I'm a pro at it by now so I can go the full 20 minutes with it. Then, rinse my mouth out with warm water and I'm done.

You want to swish the oil around inside the mouth, between the teeth, around the gums, slowly swishing away. A tablespoon of oil is the recommended amount to use. If you find it's difficult to go the full 20 minutes, spit it out and continue until you reach it. When you're done, simply spit it in the toilet, then rinse thoroughly with warm water and/or mouthwash. You will definitely feel a difference in the way your mouth and teeth feel afterwards and you will know it's working.

How does oil pulling work?

The oil you use along with your own saliva will work together to pull out the toxins and bacteria hiding in the crevices of your mouth. The process works like a magnet pulling these toxins which may cause illness if it reaches the bloodstream. It will pull the bacteria which is hiding in the pores, crevices, gums, and tubules between the teeth. Afterwards, you're spitting all these germs from your mouth, which is the gateway to the body.

What dental issues will it improve?

  • Bleeding gums
  • Oral infections
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Tooth decay
  • Cavities
  • Bad breath
  • Stained teeth
  • Loose teeth
  • Oral pain

How much will it cost?

The only cost with oil pulling is that of the oil you choose. Although organic coconut oil is more pricey than regular oils on the market and you can only get it online or in an all natural food store, it is well worth it. It has a shelf life of 1 1/2 years and the jar will last a long time. Well, my 15 ounce jar just a month or two because I use it for practically everything!! However, they do sell it in larger containers.

Oil pulling with coconut oil or whichever oil you choose should be considered if you have consistent dental problems. One thing is for sure, it won't hurt to try.

I heard of this a wee bit ago. I have been using sesame seed oil that has been roasted. It tastes like it has been roasted also. Do know if it makes any difference which oil you use? I read sesame seed is the best but coconut oil is also good but not as good. Or is it just a matter of doing it with something? What other health benefits have you heard it is good for? Great article by the way. Also, are you brushing with those commercial tooth pastes that are putting toxins back in your body or going with something more organic?

Thanks for reading and commenting. I don't think it matters which oil you use, it's really a personal preference. However, it should be organic, unrefined, and cold pressed oil. The most common are sunflower, sesame, coconut, or olive. I use coconut oil because I don't mind the taste or smell. There are a whole lot of health benefits, not just for dental health. It's good for constipation, allergies, bronchitis, diabetes, heart disease, insomnia, migraines, kidney and lung disease, menopause, etc. As far as which toothpaste I use, I haven't switched to organic, although this is something I will be looking into.

Interesting topic. Does it have to be first thing in the morning or would matter if it was before bedtime say. Also do you then brush normally with toothpaste or is this you total regime.

Thanks for reading. Yes, it works best when done first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. I brush my teeth with toothpaste after rinsing my mouth out just to get the oil taste out of my mouth. I usually do this in the morning and at nighttime I also brush my teeth with some coconut oil on my toothbrush with some toothpaste. It can also be done during the day, just on an empty stomach (4 hours after eating).

I thought it was weird when I first heard about it but when I started doing it, you can really tell the difference not only in how your teeth feel, but how they look. Plus, it has a lot of other health benefits. Thanks for reading and commenting.
