Sore Teeth – Causes, Prevention And Care

There is no denying the fact that dental health is really important though it is not taken very seriously until severe problems start showing up mainly because of ignoring dental care. Teeth is the part that helps us with the first phase of digestion; if there is anything wrong with the teeth, regular metabolism of the body can get affected. One such concern is sensitive or sore teeth. There are many reasons for sore tooth to occur: not chewing food properly, gum disease, or not brushing the teeth well. Moreover, sore tooth and gums are correlated. Even if one tooth gets affected, the other teeth suffer badly. Therefore, it is important for you to know about the causes, remedies and treatment options of sore tooth.

Causes of sore teeth

Before knowing about the treatment options and care for sensitive teeth and gum sores, it is vital to understand its causes. Gum diseases and canker sores mostly result from poor dental hygiene. The layer that underlies the teeth is made up of dentin, a calcified tissue. It serves as a protective blanket for the roots of the teeth. Therefore, when you consume very hot or cold food, the dentinal tubules present in the roots lets the stimuli to reach the nerves of the teeth causing a tingling sensation; this results in sensitive gums and teeth. This condition is a result of the damage caused to the enamel, the protective coat of the teeth. This leads to swollen gums which cause severe pain.

Consuming extremely acidic food can also result in canker sores that get painful and frustrating at times. Besides, when the tooth is affected, the gums also may get infected. In fact, soreness noticed in gums is the first symptom of sore teeth. If a gum disease is ignored, it can result in receding gums wherein the gum line begins to separate itself from the teeth surface. If you ignore this condition, there are chances to lose all the teeth over a time period. A few major causes of sore teeth and gums are:

  • Receding gums
  • Gingivitis
  • Aggressive brushing
  • Teeth grinding
  • Using acidic mouthwash
  • Consuming highly acidic foods
  • Using strong tooth whitening products
  • Tooth decay and tooth abscess

Top tips for proper dental care

  • Brushing and flossing should be done properly and regularly, preferably twice in a day with a soft bristled brush and a good toothpaste.
  • Avoid binging on highly acidic food and high calorie sweets. Ensure that you have a balanced diet. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables loaded with vitamin C.
  • Use mouth guards if you are suffering from bruxism. Teeth grinding often results in sore tooth.
  • Include sufficient calcium supplements in your diet. Drink hot water along with peppermint and salt in the mornings to strengthen the teeth and gums. Gargling with Listerine or hydrogen peroxide is also recommended after every meal.

Follow the above mentioned preventive and care tips to enjoy a good dental health.
