Using A Mouth Guard For Teeth Grinding - A Damage Control Method

If you know you are grinding your teeth while you're sleeping, one of the best things you can do to prevent any damage from being caused, is to use a mouth guard.

Granted, this way is to prevent the damage, but from all the ways that you can learn about, to stop teeth grinding at night, there's none that I've found is going to alleviate it overnight.

That leaves you with a couple of options.

You can carry on and try to ignore the problem, as best you can. Which is going to be extremely hard to ignore, when you awake each, or maybe not every morning in agony, but in most cases, you will have a lot of pain in the morning. Especially around your jaw.

That's no good to you.

So you want to find ways to try and treat teeth grinding, and believe me, it's no easy feat.

However, your 2nd option is probably going to benefit you more.

That's using a mouth guard for teeth grinding.

It prevents the damage to your teeth enamel. We all know how important the enamel is on your teeth. If you already have sensitive teeth, like myself, you'll know the least bit of damage to the enamel, can give you pain.

Nobody likes that.

Using a mouth guard for teeth grinding is a way to prevent your teeth enamel from being damaged, due to teeth grinding at night.

There's no point in accepting that you grind your teeth at night and thinking that there's nothing you can do about it.

The longer you put it off, the more damage is going to happen to the enamel on your teeth.

You don't even need to go to the dentist for a mouth guard either. Besides. that's going to be more expensive too. The quality will probably be better. I can't say as I didn't use the dentist for one. I know they're expensive though.

For me, as long as it's sturdy enough to sustain the grinding, from grinding teeth in sleep, then it's going to stop my teeth coming together, therefore, protecting the enamel.

Protecting your teeth enamel, protects you from chipping a tooth from teeth grinding,

That's one of the things you really don't want to happen is to chip a tooth.

Anyway, that's protected from using a mouth guard for teeth grinding. I would say it's a "damage control" method.

It's something you can do straight away for immediate benefits.

It doesn't stop teeth grinding though.

From what I understand, stress is a big contributor to the problem. So if you can use a mouth guard to protect your teeth from the damage caused from grinding your teeth, then you will have some time to look at other ways to lower your stress level and prevent teeth grinding episodes happening in the future.

That's a long term goal though.

Mouth guards for teeth grinding is something you can do for, very nearly, immediate relief from the pain you might be feeling in the mornings.

If you grind your teeth at night, or maybe did in the past and got things sorted. Perhaps you know someone else who used to... I'd be grateful (and I'm sure some others too) for any tips that helps prevent the problem.

I wore down my teeth because of grinding, and now I have a host of problems due to that even though I always had a perfect dental hygyene and good teeth. I also discovered that I have a mild case of sleep apnea despite being very fit and slim, and my dentist is recommending a mouth guard with a pricetag of $2,800, which is not covered by my health insurance. I think that even if they are of a better quality and will last longer than over-the-counter guards, the cost of custom-made mouthguards is a bit of a scam and they still need to be replaced every 2-3 years, and I am wondering if the most expensive over-the-counter mouthguard would be sufficient.

A mouth guard sounds uncomfortable but preferable to wearing out ones teeth! I didn't realise it could be such a big problem. I've heard my son teeth grinding occasionally!

HI Heather, Yeah, they're definitely preferable to wearing your teeth out. From what I was reading up on it, younger folks tend to grow out of it.

Thanks Rob, As far as I've learned so far is that if I lower the stress or manage it better, that's supposed to stop it. Unsure yet. I know I can't wear the denture at night. I'll see what happens in the future. Can't say just now how to stop it, but I'll sure find out one day.

Cheers Rob. I've only a partial denture and that's how I found out I was doing it. The technician I went to , to have it repaired noticed the pattern. It's expense to keep the repairs going. Better off preventing it in the first place.
