Depression Causes Sleep Disruption

Are you having sleep disruptions on a daily basis? Are you the type who sleeps too much or having trouble sleeping? If you answered 'yes', you may be depressed. Do you know how depression affects sleep? Depression causes sleep disruption by your mind being too worried or stressed. I suffered depression when I was a student and had cycles of not being able to sleep or sometimes sleeping more than required.

When you are depressed, you would lose focus on normal everyday things like working or studying. Depression also comes hand in hand with anxiety. Depression can either be clinical or caused by environmental factors such as relationship problems, job stress, financial situation, health and many more. Depression leads to many negative results to one's life and one of the most common is sleep disruption.

Getting too little sleep

Some depressed people worry a lot about their situations and may end up being insomniacs. This will further decrease the ability for a person to function on a daily basis. If you are having trouble getting to sleep because you are depressed, you need to seek help. You may want to discuss your problems with your family and friends or a professional so you can have a stable sleep pattern again.

Having enough sleep is crucial so you can attack each day's tasks in an alert way and cause less injury to yourself by avoiding accidents such as when you're driving. When you are sleepy, your mind loses the ability to absorb and process information as efficiently as when your mind is properly rested. If you are depressed, you need to get help because you do not want to lose your job and cause worry to your family and friends. Not getting enough sleep also causes your natural immunization system to become weak and make you susceptible to illnesses.

Getting too much sleep

There were days that depression caused me to become lethargic and induced me to sleep more than encouraged. It was as terrible as not getting enough sleep because I wasn't getting anything done and nearly failed my course because of it. I did not get to study as much as I had to or finish the projects I was assigned because I was too depressed to get up each morning.

I fought depression by having friends around me and setting a daily schedule that I had to follow each day. I forced myself to get up, attend classes, finish my assignments, and study for my exams on a daily basis. When you are depressed, you can't plan too far ahead in time and need to face the day as it comes. With the daily rigid time set for each task, it was easier to cope and eventually led me to having a normal sleep pattern despite of my depression.

Final thoughts

If you are depressed or know someone who is, he or she may be having sleep disruption. Help yourself or your friend before depression causes more disruption to your life which you cannot control. Sleep is important and is the basic key to a healthier mind and body. Don't let depression affect your sleep anymore.

Street Talk

This is a very helpful article. I would have to agree that sleep is very important for coping ability in life. Sometimes just this thought alone is enough to prompt me to go to bed as I know without my sleep I'm not likely to function well in many other areas the next day. Thanks for raising this awareness.

Hi Heather thanks for your comment. Yeah everyone needs sleep so it's more important that those who are not feeling emotionally and physically well to get proper and restful sleep. Through suffering from sleep disruption due to depression, I learned that regardless of my mental status, my body needed a suitable amount of rest before I could tackle everyday tasks and eventually beat depression. In my country, it is difficult and expensive to get prescription drugs anyway so one had to always rely on one's on willpower to stay healthy. Thanks again!
