Healthy Alternative Ice Cream

If you are at all like our family, a love for all things ice cream is, quite simply, a given. In our family ice cream is always a hit whether with the adults or with the kids! And we are obviously not alone. In the U.S. alone about half the population eats ice cream on a regular basis. In fact the average ice cream consumer eats ice cream about 1.6 times per week. That all adds up to a lot of ice cream! Clearly people can't get enough of it, or can they?

Well, believe it or not, in North America the overall consumption of ice cream over the last few years has actually declined, bucking the trend of increasing consumption in all other major regions of the world. There are no doubt a number of factors that can help explain this decline in consumption but it is widely believed that growing awareness of the obesity problem and its related health concerns are driving some of the decline. Of course your typical ice cream comes loaded with sugar and fat, two leading contributors of the obesity problem.

So what is an ice cream loving family to do? Raise ice cream loving obese kids? Well, like I said, in our family we love our ice cream. And we have had our share of struggles in containing the amounts that the kids eat but also the amounts we adults eat! We have gone through our cycles of looking for a healthy alternative ice cream. You can of course find low-cream ice cream, low-sugar ice cream, and even ice cream with artificial sweeteners. We have had our experiences with all of them. So, how about an 'ice cream' that has none of the 'bad' ingredients yet makes kids think they are eating real ice cream?

You may or may not have heard about the Yonanas frozen fruit machine by now. I know I didn't give it too much thought when I first heard about it, but in the end, I was persuaded to buy it for all the above reasons. So what does the Yonanas machine do differently than all the other ice cream, slurpee, smoothie, or frozen yogurt makers out there? It takes frozen fruit and it turns it into an ice-cream like consistency.

The result is a creaminess comparable to ice cream and if you are using well ripened fruits like bananas, there is enough natural sugars in the fruit that it has enough sweetness that kids will like. I know this because it has been a hit with our kids. So the thing that sets the Yonanas machine apart from the rest is that it takes completely healthy ingredients i.e. frozen fruit and gives it a texture very close to ice cream which I think is the one key thing that allows kids to accept it as an ice cream replacement.

When it comes to possible Yonanas recipes, you can of course try any number of possible fruit combinations. There is also the option of adding non-fruit items such as nuts, chocolate chips, etc. As parents trying to raise healthy eating kids and loving ice cream at the same time, we are just happy we have found a way to make healthy alternative ice cream that kids love!
