Alexandria - The Pearl Of the Mediterranean

For anyone who's ever been in love with books this is the legendary mother lode of much lost knowledge throughout the centuries. The first thing that comes to mind when it comes to this ancient city is the Library of Alexandria, one of humanity's most impressive archives which according to history was the biggest and most comprehensive collection of information in the ancient world. But that is not all Alexandria was throughout the centuries of the past – it has served as a focal point for many conflicts during those times and the fact that it was a major trade center as well. Another impressive structure was the Alexandria Lighthouse which led ships to the local harbor for a long time until two earthquakes damaged it beyond repair.

The history of Alexandria is what makes it amazing even today when much of its former glory has former glory has faded, so when you're here you will have ample opportunities to explore buildings remaining from the ancient world and some ruins possibly from the time when Alexandria was a small town know as Rakotis, before Alexander the Great came here and pushed this place into becoming a thriving community. This city was once the capital of Egypt and an overwhelming center of culture, arts and science before the invasion of the Arabs in 641 who decided a place to the south of Cairo will be the new capital. Alexandria went in decline over the following centuries when war brought ruin to this place over time. Napoleon conquered the city once, the British took it back and after some unsuccessful rebellions much of the city was reduced to rubble through British naval bombardment in the 1880s.

There are many places of interest to see around here and you will have to do your own share of exploring to enjoy Alexandria fully:

• The Citadel of Qaitbay

A medieval fortress built right on the spot of the original Alexandria Lighthouse, the Citadel has dominated the shores here during the Crusades as it was here to safeguard the city from European attacks. It has been nearly destroyed and reconstructed twice through the centuries and today it stands as a maritime museum which offers interesting tours.

• The Alexandria National Museum

Containing a great deal of historical artifacts and archeological pieces gathered from the area and elsewhere. It certainly has a unique atmosphere and out here you'll be able to find out more about the roots of the people here and what their culture has gone through during the many conquests which brought something new into their society each time.

• Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Built over the ancient site of the original Library of Alexandria which was burned by accident when Caesar's forces set their ships aflame. Today's modern library is a massive learning center where many people seeking knowledge flock and study. It has a truly massive library, museums, art galleries, permanent exhibitions, a planetarium and even a laboratory for manuscript restoration. An experience you won't forget also due to the clever architecture which uses natural lighting provided by the hot Egyptian sun.

There are plenty of other places to visit around here such as sunbathing at the beach in Maa'moura or Montazah, take a walk on the Corniche – a beautiful and interesting experience with plenty of shopping opportunities. You can also try out the local food which has an interesting mixture of Arabic, Greek and other cultures intertwined here when every one of them left their mark on Alexandria. Overall this is an opportunity you should not miss if you are having a vacation in Alexandria, since it presents a chance to see another side of the ancient nation beside Cairo and the Pyramids we all know too well.
