Baby boomers represent a significant portion of the travel industry and as more retire this trend should continue for the foreseeable future. Over 50% of the discretionary spending power, in the United States alone, rests with the baby boomers and they are responsible for over half of all consumer spending according to some studies. Baby boomers play a big role in the economy with boomers accounting for about 80% of all leisure travel.
Where are baby boomers travelling to? What are their favorite destinations? The answer is everywhere. Here are a few.
Italy
Nowhere in Europe can match the romance of Italy’s finest cities, towns and villages. With history seeping from every weathered stone and every rolling hillside, it’s virtually impossible for you to leave without feeling utterly enchanted. The ancient sites of Roman civilization are to be found everywhere. Or be enchanted by the medieval towns of Corciano, Volterra, or Montepulciano which are still inhabited and still vibrant to this day. In Florence can be found most of the works of the Renaissance masters. Or cruising the canals of Venice and wondering why this city was made in this way. The rolling hills of Tuscany and its famed vineyards may hold such a grip on you that you may not want to leave. Italy will always be a must visit destination.
Paris
Who cannot we spell bound by this magnificent city; arguably the capital of all European cities. With its wide avenues, lush parkland, and outstanding buildings and monuments; Paris is truly what can be called eye candy. Walk from the Eiffel Tower down the Seine River to Notre Dame Cathedral. Or stroll down les Champs Elysées from the Arc de Triomphe to Place de la Concorde and then over to Jardins Tuileries. This can be done easily in a morning on foot.
Buy a museum pass and gain access to some of the finest art collections in the world at Louvre or the impressionist masters at Musee d'Orsay. Or ponder life at Paris's jewel like Orangerie, home to Monet's 360 degree masterwork called Waterlilies.
So much to do. You will want to return.
Santorini
This Greek island is incredible. As you approach it by boat you will be awed by its high cliffs which cover one side of the island. These were formed due to a massive volcanic eruption thousands of years ago when essentially half of the island fell into the sea. Perched on these cliffs are the towns of Fira and Oia; both offering stunning views of the surrounding Mediterranean. Enjoy the spectacular sunset while dining on a fresh caught sea bass grilled to perfection from a cliff side restaurant. Truly beautiful and romantic.
These are just some of the places that baby boomers are travelling to and many more destinations are becoming popular with this demographic including some places that you may find surprising such as Sri Lanka, India, Vietnam, Burma and Turkey to name a few. Certainly much more can be written about the travel habits of boomers.
