Beautiful Istria

The beauty of the green Istria is unparalleled. The region is beautiful in every season of the year, particularly in autumn. The main characteristic of the Istrian cuisine is the big variety of its natural ingredients. Its basic elements are part of its historical development: salt, fish, olives, wine, the persimmon fruit, asparagus, truffles. The sea gave people fish and salt. Fishing was one of the most important trades already in the Middle Ages, but salt taking is even older. The procedure of salt taking at Slovenian salt pans carried out by means of natural processes, is over 700 years old.

Olive oil as an ingredient is famous for its beneficial effects on our health, invites us to taste delicious dishes, meat, fish, vegetables, even desserts made with olive oil.

Vines give Istria wide selection of excellent wines, the best known are probably ,,refosk'' and ,,malvasia''. The nearby Strunjan valley is the home of the persimmon fruit, full of vitamins, also called ,,the food of Gods’’. Asparagus is another famous Mediterranean plant, growing mostly on the forest edge.

People are proud of their land. Without yesterday there is no today and no tomorrow. Tourism manages to intervene the threads of the past and present with special skill. Would the food have its delicious taste if modern cooks did not respect the recipes of their grandmothers? The respect for the county is felt in the attitude towards its heritage and culture, keeping in touch with old habits and traditions, respecting the work of generations of ancestors from all walks of life.

How can we join together fresh, cooked and roasted delicacies? The answer is: by invitation. Visitors may taste and enjoy the famous Istrian cuisine in the inns, restaurants as well as in the numerous hotel resorts. For centuries, Slovenian dishes and wine offer a tradition so rich, yet simple and appetizing it would indeed be sin if you left it only at reading. Therefore I invite you to taste them. For many tourists the arrival in Slovenian Istria is the goal of their destination, for others a starting point. Visit this region and enjoy the nature, hospitality, tradition, delicacies and wine. The local wine growers are striving to bring the region closer to people across Slovenia and beyond its borders. Real prove are various organized events such as the Wine Queen of Slovenia contest, many regional Wine festivals, the Open door Days at wine cellars and oil mills , Saint Martin's Festival and many, many other events.

Slovenia is a great place to visit. I particularly like Lake Bled in the Julian Alps, and the food and wine is good as well

Small country but interesting. You can make a tour in a week and see most of Slovenian highlights. Apart from Istria (the Slovenian Adriatic coast), some of the its best travel spots are Postojna jama, Ljubljana, Maribor, Pohorje, and the Socha river valley that's on the north close to the Slovenian Alps. All at all it's a kind of transit rather than final Destination, but, with a lot of things to see, experience and taste!
