Finding Your Way

This is the year in which the Mayan calendar indicates the world will end as we know it. It appears that in late December, the calendar runs out on us. There will be mayhem of all sorts. Volcanoes will explode, the weather will become unpredicatable and satellites will drop out of the sky. The question is, if you survive the expected onslaught, how will you get from point A to point B with out your GPS?

I would like to say that I have been blessed with a pretty reliable built in GPS system. It isn't to say that I can plot my location, but I have a pretty darn good built-in mapping system. Most any place that I have been to is burned into my memory. Years later I can go to that general area and find my way around, recalling every building, street and business along the way.

There are many people I have come across that also have this ability. The one thing we share in common is that a world without GPS systems will have little effect upon us. The same can not be said for a large slice of the population that have become dependent upon these technological wonders. For that matter, many use the device to simply get home from work.

So what exactly are you going to do without all of our electronic wonders to get around?

My first thought is to start collecting some highways maps. A Road Atlas is a great place to start. I always marveled each year with the new atlas that State Farm Insurance Company sent my father each year. I would sit and go through each of the states, looking for new ways to get to new places. My father would also take a highlighter pen and chart our course to California from Nebraska each year. In my mind, following those lines would allow me to day dream of undiscovered locations.

Another way to start learning how to map directions in your mind is collect state road maps if living in the United States. Others may find collecting detailed maps of various countries beneficial. With each map, you will find greater detail of the smaller roads less travelled. Either way, you will end up knowing the routes better than the local populace.

Lastly, when you do travel, pay attention to your surroundings. There are so many people in a hurry these days. Getting from point A to point B is considered a nuisance. The only focus they have is on the pavement stretching out in front of them. Instead, you should focus on the passing landscape. You need to absorb the scenery, every tree, every building, and every new discovery. As you do this, each thing you see will be burned into your memory, available for instant recall at a later date.

You know, I feel pretty confident that the Mayans were only guessing. In fact, I am pretty sure that the year 2012 will disappear into the year 2013. There will be those worried until the end and if so, prepare as you might. Collect your maps, buy a compass or two, and figure out where you will go if calamity should occur. That is if the Mayans are correct and your GPS will not work anymore. You will need to figure out how to get around the old fashioned way.

But if you are like me, life will go on as usual. We will still have satellites in the sky to mark our position here on the ground. Keep using your electronic devices to map your position and find your way; that is until your battery fades.
