Grand Turks: the Migraine Got In the Way

It was unfortunate that a migraine put a damper on my few hours stay in Grand Turks. The migraine started out very light but I knew I had to hustle to at least see something before heading back to the ship. I’ve never been to Grand Turks before.

My ship Nieuw Amsterdam and another Holland America Line ship Westerndam both docked at the pier. At the end of the pier is a beach to spend the day watching the two ships and enjoying the hot sun and cool water.

I decided to take the taxi for a $5.00 ride to Cockburn Town, the capital and seat of government Turks and Caicos. I shared the ride with a group who used my taxi driver as a tour guide though I hate to admit his voice annoyed me over the speakers or maybe it was just me with this migraine. But I got a bonus tour for about 15 minutes before he dropped me off at Cockburn Town (the ride is only five minutes from port). Grand Turks gained fame when John Glenn’s Friendship 7 Mercury spacecraft landed near here. The driver passed by the replica of John’s spacecraft located at the entrance at the airport.

The town itself is cute, the long and narrow streets decorated with old lamps powered by electricity. The architecture is from the 18th to 19th century. The buildings here are variety of colours pinks, blues, and yellows. There was one house that their red truck matched the roofing colour. I knew I wasn’t going to stay long since the brightness started to bother me. Bummer.

There are a few things here to see besides a bit of shopping and stop somewhere for a drink in Cockburn Town.

Her Majesty Prison, built in 19th century, housed runaway slaves. The last hanging occurred here in 1960. It’s open when the cruise ships are in.

National Museum is one of the oldest stone buildings on the islands. This museum houses the Molasses Reef wreck of a European ship, the first wreck recorded in 1505.

Victoria Library began during Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887 and completed two years later to the tune of 568 British pounds. It’s a very small library inside but still continues to serve the public. If you don’t have a mobile device, you can use the Internet for $5.00 an hour.

I left the library, looking at the spectacular ocean. Just wish I could have stayed here a little longer but I needed to head back.

When I got back to port, I tried to sit on one of the lounge chairs to enjoy the beach and the view. But the migraine was getting worse and I needed to seek darkness. Drats! What disappointment since I had planned to take the Island Tram Tour that you could book online or as someone stated on the Trip Advisor site that they bought a ticket when they got off the ship which is what I would have done that morning. It looked like the best way to go to see the island in a short time. Oh well, next time.
