Land Of the Lakes

Birth of morning behind the gentle hills. The state-room is carpeted with silver frost and there the morning is welcomed by three trees – each standing in its own pose. One raises its branches in admiration, lauding the light of the first rays. The other is re-solved to seduce the Young Sun with its coy svelte figure. The third has gone far ahead and, like a loyal sentry before the gates of sun, wants to be the first to welcome its Leader who comes crowned with a radiant coronet.

The elderly in Macedonia still believe that one will have a good day if one awakes early enough to see the sunrise. They used to salute the newborn sun, face to face, with it – through prayers. Yet, the Sun is not the cause of daylight; it is rather the other way round – the Light of Day fathers it. How else are we to interpret the fact that the Light of Day arrives first, before the Sun and the Dawn. The Sun is actually born from the scarlet womb of the Dawn, after the Day plants the first light in her.

You will find gold- bearing rivers, like this one, where in autumn the forest pours its streams of gold. In winter, settled on the river – bed, they glow through the ice like gold dust, only to be swept away in spring by the powerful torrents of melting snow before anyone touches them.

There is a place that always offers a perfect landscape, every day of the year and every hour of the day. If Macedonia has a stage, than it is here, on the turrets that defend the gates to Samuel’s Fortress – the citta-del towering above Ohrid. Undoubtedly, many of this city’s lords have gone into epic reveries, gazing at the lake and the distant hills and dreaming of innumerable armies, glorious victories, mighty empires and treasuries full of gold and pearls.

But here, the anchor of their dreams has eyed them from the pinewood below.

Clement’s temple at Plaosnik stands like a warning that before stepping into any width or depth you should tie yourself to a firm mainstay, lest the vast expanse of glory and power or the dark depths of lust and evil should swallow you.

It had been a sultry day. The people’s prayers and curses were heard. In a moment, the clear sky clouded over and grayness frowned from the above the mountains by the lake. The torrential rain of a summer’s day descended on the sweltering shore to quench its thirst. The people on the lakeside, who had been working in their gardens, blessed every drop. The panic stricken swimmers on the beaches hid under the canopies.

The lake rippled and the boats began to rock on the little waves. The boatmen had nowhere to hide – it will pass, any moment now!

This is when the true enthusiasts go for a dip. There is no better time to swim than during a summer shower.

Then the water around you seems warmer than the rain. The sun is not there to blind you while you swim and your eyes are free to glut on the lake.

Macedonian lakes do not sleep at night but rather during the day. Once the fisherman draws his boat on the shore. They fall asleep once the wind abates, once the water becomes still and thickens like oil. Time stops then, the lake falls into a slumber and the sun begins to mirror itself in the water, coyly, through the veil of the gossamer-like clouds. Even the slightest excitement could disturb this timeless séance.

Children could suddenly emerge from the houses and run across the sand to plough the water and thus break the mirror of the lake into countless shards. A bird could suddenly alight on the water and break this divine stillness.

By the shore, a spider hangs above the water from its web. Accidentally, one of its hairy limbs touches the surface and there, on the liquid silver coating, a ring of invisible waves is made, followed by another and yet another. The sun raises its cheek from the water, for the perfect circle of its countenance has already been disturbed.

The silence has been broken and time resumes above the lake.

Very nice article, Ljupcho. While reading I could picture the landscape into my mind. I also enjoyed the imagery of the 'panic stricken swimmers' :) Yes, I agree ... there is nothing better than swimming while raining!
