Must See Sites Along the Ring Of Kerry, Ireland

My favorite place in Ireland, which I generally loved, was the Ring of Kerry. These reasons for a visit explain what you’ll see and do during a visit.

A trip to Ireland isn’t complete without a bus ride around the Ring of Kerry. We rented a car, even though the cost of doing so was quite expensive because we wanted to get out, walk, see and bird. One warning I will make is this is truly fairy land. How I know this, I will explain below.

Killarney, the Headquarters of the Ring of Kerry is a Quaint Town to Walk and Shop

We needed a good place to set up our headquarters during our visit to Killarney National Park and the Ring of Kerry. We found an inexpensive hotel right across from the park but had to use an internet café downtown and try out one of the many fine restaurants.

Mountain Pass in the Ring of Kerry, Ireland

Heading out of Killarney on N-71 leads you to falls and a cascading brook known as Torc Waterfall which runs beside a church.

Ladies View and Moll’s Gap

Ladies View is a great place to stop and buy some tourist goods just before you head off over the mountains through Moll’s Gap. The crofts and flocks along the way are interesting to see and you’re likely to pick up a hawk or two if you’re a birder.

The Dunlow Castle Estate in Killarney National Park, Ireland

The shortest hike from downtown Killarney is the Dunlow Castle estate. You walk past St. Mary’s Cathedral and turn into Killarney National Park. You will bypass a teahouse built into the gardener’s cottage and then reach the main estate.

Newer Ross Castle in Killarney, National Park, Ring of Kerry, Ireland

Definitely take the walk from Ross Castle, which looks more like a fort, off along the Knockneer Demesne, it’s very beautiful and a fairly short easy hike.

Historic Circular Staigue Fort along the Ring of Kerry, Ireland

Along the Ring of Kerry, this one ancient circular fort named Staigue Fort is well worth the visit. Those traveling by bus will have a several mile hike because the buses can’t drive the driveway which is very narrow. We were traveling by car and had no difficulty. It’s a good place to bird, too.

Gardens at the Muckross House Estate and Gardnes in the Ring of Kerry, Ireland

Many of the forested places along the Ring of Kerry, especially near Muckross Abbey, a short distance from Killarney where most people stay before departing on the circuitous route, has millions of either blue bells or wild onions in the green grassy fields. The walk continues past the Abbey, along lakes, boats, through some hidden places, past the gardeners cabin before reaching the glorious gardens and the main estate. The effect is stunning. To get there, we parked at Muckross Abbey and walked in. Other options are to rent a horse drawn carriage.

Golf Near the Ring of Kerry, Ireland

Golf near the Ring of Kerry is easily accessible at Killorgin, home of the King Puck, which is about a 45 minute drive from Killarney. We were able to call ahead for a tee time, and found food at the clubhouse before teeing off.
