Nikolaev, Ukraine Travel: History, Interesting Facts And Places to Visit

When people are talking about places to see during Ukraine travel they almost never mention Nikolaev. For some reason Nikolaev is considered to be plane and boring and they think there is nothing to see here. Even some citizens of this city have the same opinion. But are they right? I think people who say that don’t know much about the city and haven’t really seen it. Nikolaev is a place with it’s own beauty and you should look closer to see it.

Nikolaev is rather “young” and exists for only 222 years. It’s nothing comparing with such an old city as Kiev. But in it’s history our city has many interesting facts. First of all it’s the name. The place where Juzhnyj bug meets Ingul was called in honor of victory in Ochakiv, when Russian troupes defeated  Turkish. It all happened on the day of the Chistian saint Nikolaj. So it was decided to call the new town Nikolaev. With its expansion the town had become an important shipbuilding centre and known for this in the entire Soviet Union. Besides many brave people used to live here. All the members who participated in the liberation of the city during the World war II got the status of “The hero of the Soviet Union”.  It was the only case in the history of that time.

Nikolaev city has also its own architectural peculiarities. All streets here are straight and it’s very hard to get lost. Besides we have wide prospects and a lot of greenery. So the image of the city is very nice.  The sad thing is that there are not many really old buildings here. The war that broke here in 1942 left its traces. But there are a lot of constructions that remained from the period of USSR so Nikolaev is considered to have a very soviet look. Even a movie was filmed here because city’s look shows the way that average city looked like in the Soviet period.

As for the places of interests Nikolaev travel also has something to offer. First of all you should visit Zoo. It is considered to be the best in Ukraine and people from all over the country come here to see different animals. Recently here appeared a lion cub and you can even hold him and take a picture.

The other place recommended to see is Nikolaev Shipbuilding museum. I think it has a very interesting collection and the excursion is spectacular. If you are interested in history you can see the local history museum, if you are fascinated by the astronomy you can visit The City Observatory. You can always find something interesting here no matter what you like. And don’t forget to walk down Sovetskaya street and see the sunset near the river. You will love it for sure.

So Nikolaev travel is not just another one city you pass by during your holidays in Ukraine, going to Odessa or some other place. It’s a city with its own history and there’s a lot to see here.
