Old San Juan

Puerto rico known as the gateway of the Caribbean is one of the most exotic islands in the world. Located between the Caribbean and North Atlantic Ocean this tourist vacation destination offers the highest levels of quality, high standards and best local dishes at reasonable prices. Old San Juan is Puerto Rico’s central tourist destination. Passing through the narrow streets, we’ll make a tour and visit some of its major sight of interest.

Starting at La Casita information center where you can find the most current information of the island, down the street and along the waterfront you pass by Old San Juan Sheraton hotel and see the military fortification San Christobal. It is one of the largest military fortifications in America used to protect from land attacks. A tour of the Castle is highly recommended. There are a number of levels and tunnels to explore and this is of particular interest for the kids. On the right two blocks away behind the large trees is a small plaza and San Juan theater at the end. On the right is the Norzgaray Street and the San Juan Museum. Newly restored, this building houses first-class rotating exhibits as well as a permanent exhibition on the history of San Juan.

Further ahead is the entrance to Castle of San Felipe Moro (El-Moro) a complex of elaborate design. Started in 1540 this fortification took 250 years to take its present form. This is a place of interest with a lot of information in regard to its history and architecture and requires service from an excellent tourist guide.

Passing across the Norzgaray Street with El-Moro at your back is very easy to reach Plaza Beneficencia and the entrance to Casa Blanca at the southwest corner of the plaza. Casa Blanca was built as a reward to the Governor Juan Ponce Leon, who died before he could move in. As an original home residence of Ponce Leon family it stayed for over 250 years. Now Casa Blanca is a famous San Juan Museum presenting the 16th and 17th century family life. The entrance to Casa Blanca faces Saint Sebastian Street. Walking down is Christo Street famous for the Chapel of Christo.

One of the original main city squares, close to Saint Christo Street is Plaza de Armas, an important social meeting place for generations. On the left side of this point is one of the major shopping areas of Old San Juan (ranging from high-end jewelry to designer outlets). Nearby is La Fortaleza, one of the oldest continuously used executive mansion in the western Hemisphere.

Old San Juan squares present an artistic gather points for many artists that use to display their creations. Sundays in Old San Juan are declared as a romantic getaway for all those who like live music and great melodies played by local trios.

I'll be there in mid February for one day, off of a cruise. Have visited here twice before. The first time, I was just driven around the city, the second I made a quick dash to Old San Juan before my ship cruised. This time, I'm going to take my time to explore. I love it here! So much history, the cobbled streets/sidewalks.
