Places to Stay In St - tropez Without Breaking the Bank

When you mention St-Tropez to most people, you imagine decadence, champagne, James Bond, oily millionaires with grey chest wigs in shorts and boat shoes (or is that just me!), but you don't have to be stinking rich to enjoy the pleasure that St-Tropez have to offer. No sir, you can still visit the millionaires playground without having to remortgage the house and sell the kids (please don't sell your kids!), so I thought I'd give you a little breakdown of nice places to stay on the French Riviera that won't break the bank.

1. Pavillion de Pampelonne

Rated by many as one of the nicest hotels in the area. It's actually just outside of the main area, but this delightful "villa style" hotel more than makes up for it's location and service. Run by a British couple, it's situated just 600 metres from the Pampelonne beach, rated by many as one of the best in Europe, and has a friendly, relaxed vibe that is hard to find in an area this wealthy. With a beautiful pool area to take breakfast, this is one of the hidden gems of the French Rivera, with many people booking return visits every year. English hospitality with a dollop of French pzazz, at prices that won't break the bank.

2. Hotel Le Ponche

This stunning 4 star hotel may look a million dollars (or Euros), but its rates are very competitive for its luxurious surroundings and history. Overlooking the bay of St-Tropez, this 3 storey hotel is quite literally on the beach, and is the perfect blend of refined traditional style with a modern charm. The hotel was actually used in Roger Vadim's film "Et Dieu créa la femme", and has been home to Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuve, Kylie Minogue and Jack Nicholson to name just a few. The in house chef is Christian Geay, who has been in service for more than 20 years, so if you are looking for a touch of decadence at a reasonable price, I would advise the Hotel Le Ponche every time.

3. Hotel Le Mouillage

This fantastic mid range hotel is situated right on the old harbour, with fantastic views of the yachts and boats that make the daily trip into St-Tropez. With just 14 rooms, this charming hotel is located just 5 minutes walk from the main strip, but is fantastically secluded for romantic breaks and peace and quiet. There's a great deal of free parking, plus a great pool and patio area to relax by day or night. Well worth a visit if you like French rustic charm without the heavy price tag.

Let me make one thing clear. If you're visiting St-Tropez, bring your wallet! It's not a cheap holiday destination, but I guess you know that already. If you do plan on heading down to the French Rivera though, be sure to check out these fantastic hotels though. They offer great rates for a standard room (particularly off season), and provide the perfect blend of service and comfort that your stay requires. One of the most enjoyable ways to reach France is by taking the ferry from Dover across to Calais and then pickup up a hire car. Alternatively there are trains which run from the UK to France via the Eurostar service.
