Popular Hunter Valley Vineyards

The Hunter Valley situated some 2 hours North of Sydney is the oldest wine producing  region of Australia and is regarded as being home to some of the best wines in the world. It is approximately 12000 square kilometres in size. It is regarded one of the most popular holiday destinations in Australia today, also attracting many overseas visitors.

Pokolbin is hub of the wine region which incorporates the towns of Wollombi, Dalwood, Rothbury, Cessnock and Lovedale to name but a few.

Lindemans , McWilliams and Wyndham are all major producers who have vineyards in the region whilst Tyrrell and Drayton are  old  Hunter Valley family concerns who have remained independent. In addition to this there are numerous boutique wine producers.

Henry Lindeman first planted vines in the Hunter Valley over 165 years ago. In 1842 he purchased a 330 acre property called Cawarra and the following year he planted his first vines of the Riesling, Shiraz and Verdelho varietals.

In 1912, the Ben Ean Winery was purchased which today is home to the Lindemanís   Hunter Valley Cellar Door which is open daily apart from Good Friday, Christmas and New Years days.

Tyrrell, one of Australiaís most successful, privately owned wine companies has two vineyards in the Hunter Valley, the Pokolbin Vineyards and Winery and the Glenbawn Estate Vineyard and Winery. They were voted 2010 Winery of the year by James Halliday. They are renowned for their Vat1 Semillon which has won more trophies and gold medals than any other Australian White Wine. Their cellar door is situated at the first property whilst the Glenbawn wines are only available through licensed food outlets and hotels.

There are literally hundreds of wineries in the Hunter Valley and the above are just a few.

Obviously it would be impossible to visit them all in one go and possibly more than a little unwise. Regardless of the drink driving laws in Australia it makes no sense to try to cram everything into a few hours of tasting.

Hope Estate, formerly Rothbury Estate, have expanded into entertainment with shows by such people as Elton John and Dolly Parton taking place in their grounds.

If you have the time, spend a few days in the region or at least a weekend. Try to join a tour or arrange your own private tour to the wineries which are of interest to you or have a meal at one of the estate restaurants where you can match their cellar door wines to your food or have it delived to your exotic accommodation.  The choice is limitless.
