Travel Abroad In Japan This Winter - the Toilet Seats Are Warm!

If you get the chance to travel abroad to Japan this winter you probably will partake in a bit of hot sake and possibly a nice hot relaxing Onsen. But there is one thing that most people who travel abroad to Japan miss out on. There is one thing that I absolutely love and that is waking up in the morning, and sitting on a nice warm toilet seat.

This is one of the best things that you could possibly experience when you travel abroad to Japan in the winter. Now if you are unfamiliar with Japanese toilets this is where I should emphasize that the toilet seat is not warm because someone else has been sitting on it before you, but it is actually electrically heated to a certain temperature of your choice. Yes that is correct - you can indeed play with the temperature, but be warned, these things can get hot, and if you happen to be so relaxed that you do fall asleep you may find it hard to sit anywhere for a few days after.

As well as this fantastic heated seat, Japanese toilets are more like the Captains chair on Start Trek than places to sit and ponder. Next to this throne is a control panel that is used for operating all the features that this amusement park has to offer. Upon entry into the bathroom - the seat cover may automatically lift up for you, (who wants to lift up the seat cover themselves), and it also will close when you leave.

Almost all come with a bidet feature that must have an internal GPS system for zeroing in on the exact location. This bidet, again, can be controlled for temperature and also water pressure (NOTE - it is best to start off with the low pressure - trust me on this). Once you have finished the shower part of your toileting duties - the blow dryer button on the Captain Kirk remote can be activated and the part of your body that usually produces the hot air is now being blown dry. "Hmmm a little powder spray as well - don't mind if I do" - "oh and what about this fragrance button - definitely will be pressing that."

Suffice to say - if all of this is a bit daunting for you or if you cant make sense of the controls (they are all in of course in Japanese) then there is always the obligatory roll of T.P not too far away.

Don't get me wrong - when you travel abroad to Japan, sushi, sake and onsen should definitely be on your list - but the next morning try and venture out of your comfort zone, play with the Star Trek controls - you may end up happily surprised.

So next time you travel abroad in Japan - go during the winter so you can experience one of the great joys that life has to offer. Warp Speed to you.

Looking forward to reading more of your articles. I was in Japan for a month in '97 and loved it. Cried when I had to come home. And I was there in the winter :-)
