Visit The Beautiful Caribbean Island Of Nevis

Visit The Island Of Nevis

Nevis is a beautiful island in the caribbean. The population is a little over 10,000 people. The official language is english and the local currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar ($2.67=U.S. $1) Many shops and restaurants quote prices in U.S. dollars. The majority of the population are descendants of African slaves.

Christopher Columbus discovered the island of Nevis in 1493 and named it Nuestra Senora de la Nieves, which is spanish for 'Our lady of the Snows'. The island is also affecionately referred to as the Queen of the Caribees. The original inhabitants were the Caribs, Arawaks, and Aceramis peoples until british settlers took control of the island in 1628. Nevis is one of the islands which comprises the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. There are two main political parties, The Concern Citizens Movement and The Nevis Reformation Party . The Federation gained independence from Great Britain in 1983 but still maintains cultural and historic ties to England. The island holds democratic elections as per their constitution every five years.

Nevis is on Atlantic Standard Time year round and has an average temperature of 79 F, low humidity, white sand beaches and unspoiled natural beauty. It is critical to note that motorists drive on the left unlike on the right in the United States. Visitors and locals alike visit the hot mineral springs annually which are very famous. The tallest peak on the island is nevis Peak, which rises to 3,182 feet. the capital is Charlestown. The two msot famous residents are Admiral Horatio Nelson and Alexander Hamilton, who later moved to the United States.

Most visitors come to Nevis via St. Kitts by the ferrys which provides inter island transportation between both islands. Some local native dishes include steamed fish, fungi and okra, rice and pigeon peas, saltfish and dumplings, and cassava bread. Along with the famous mineral springs, visitors can visit the following attractions: Easter Derby, Culturama, Horse Racing, Sport Fishing Tournaments, Nevis Historical and Conservations Society, Musuem of Nevis History, and The Horatio Nelson Museum.

Some great beaches on the island are (world famous)Pinneys Beach, Oualie Beach, Nisbet Beach, New Castle Beach, Lovers Beach, and Indian Castle Beach.

Nevis is a perfect for a romantic or family get away. The beaches are perfect with panaromic views that taked your breath away. I spent a lot of summers as a child with grandparents on the island. I really enjoyed those times because it gave me firsthand experience, knowledge and memories. Even today being much older I love the beautiful island of Nevis.
