Visiting New York #1

We had just checked into our hotel, placed our luggage in our room, and was going outside fo a walk, when I heard Bob, telling a gorgeous female security guard, how beautiful she was.

I expected a comment, like thank you, a giggle a smile or a grin. Instead I heard a vocal expression of disgust, a sound that I knew very well, she ( sucked her teeth). I stopped, looked at Bob in astonishment, not mentioning a word, he appeared perplexed.

I said to him, you have used this line on many occasions in the Bahamas, and you always got a smile, I would hate to believe that the women of Big Apple, cannot appreciate a compliment. I told him we needed to conduct a survey, to see if this was an isolated case or the norm.

We visited a number of stores, and the responses were the opposite of our first encounter. We concluded that the young woman was never told by her peers or family how beautiful she was.

We then left the hotel and went to a restaurant across the street, they had a wide choice of dishes. After selecting what we wanted, we went to the cashier, where we paid for our food and went downstairs, where we had an enjoyable and tasty supper. After supper, we returned to our hotel, where we rested for the following day.

About 8:00am we went to the front of the hotel, Time Square and broadway, where we boarded a bus that took us to the Jacob J. Convention Center. As we entered the building we met thousands of people, some were registering, others heading towards the elevators, some going on the basement floor while others were going to the Book Convention on the third floor.

There were authors, writers and store owners everywhere. My wish was to take as many seminars as possible on the varied topics being discussed. After leaving the convention center for that day, I began to watch the way the people live and things that were important to them.

As we drove through one of the streets to our hotel, we saw evergreen trees that lines the small crowded street, with three feet tall metal circular fences for protection, but a little further I saw wooden cages about six feet tall, placed around these sidewalk trees, I knew at that moment these people do care about the safety and protection of their trees and the benefits that they provides to us that live on this planet.

Alfred, this article so took me by surprise. It was casual and fun and simple observation. Made me want to go see it again myself.... I've only had one night there and that doesn't really count. I enjoyed the curiosity of your mind!

I enjoyed my visit to NYC, it was different to any other place I have been to, and the people are the same, some great others very serious and concentrated, it is a place all should try to visit at sometime... loved the place and hope to return one day... need months to see everything... much like Washington DC. so much to see and so little time to see it in....

Like all things in the Big Apple, you'll find peoples' reaction to comments (or come-ons) will vary widely, from militant feminism to taxi-driving Sady Hawkinses (ref: "On TheTown"). Then there are those who are paranoid, or who think the streets of NYC are a place in need of paranoia. Then there are those who are so 'busy' (self-important, that is) that they have no time for strangers's questions, etc. The fight to keep living trees as part of Manhattan's street-scape is a long and interesting one--I'll simply say that the fences you saw are the least of it.. Thanks for the article, Alfred--humorous and enjoyable.
