Visiting New York # 2

New York Parks

As we continued our walk along 5th and 6th ave, I saw a park on the opposite side of the street with iron fences that displayed pictures and statues and a marbled water fountain, that I had to investigate. As I stepped on to the sidewalk inspected the statue of Benito Juarez (1763 - 1838) former president of Mexico. The next statue was of Jose B. De A. E Silva (1763 - 1838) patriarch of Brazil, statesman, scientist and Author. I must say, It surprised me to find a statue of men so far away from home.

As I explored this park, of tables, chairs, and beach umbrella, I began to realize that this was unlike any other park that I has visited before. It was originally called Reservoir Square, but was re-named in honour of William Cullen Bryant a poet and editor of New York evening post.

At present it is privately managed public open space, which sits on 9.6 acres of manicured lawn and tress that provides lush green foliage and homes for native and migrating birds, from near and far.

As you enter this park, to the left and right there are pathways around the perimeter where most of the trees are, this area provides the opportunity for organizers to introduce bird watching tours. But this place is more a recreation area for having a nice lunch, or talking to friends. In the next few paragraph, I will introduce you to the events that brings life to a real park..

(a) (b) Tai Chi ( World Tai Chi Day)

(n) Reading Room

(o) HBO Summer Film Festival

(p) Broadway in Bryant Park

(q) Piano Performances by internationally acclaimed pianist like Ella and Ramsey Scott, playing ragtime, jazz,

(r) Bryant Park Grill and Cafe.

This site is a perfect example of what is possible, when authorities decides to manage a place where people in a large city can reap the reward of a successful urban public space for the natives and tourist to visit and enjoy. My visit to this park was an enjoyable one.

It is now time for me to leave this park and continue my journey, to see what else Manhattan has to offer. Our next stop was Harold Square, which smaller than the previous site, but both park has a history that is similar.

These articles remind me of my favorite children's author, Hugh Lofting. He wrote many books, the Dr. Doolittle series. I enjoyed them more for the 'coziness' of the storys' ambiance than for the adventures. You have a great 'voice' Alfred--keep writing--it won't matter what subject. Thanks for sharing.
