It is just not fair that the weather in Antigua is always so flippin' nice! In the US records are being broken of daily 'highs' below zero and in some places temperatures have not been this low in 4 years! In Antigua, on the other hand temperatures are hovering well above 25 degrees Celsius (70+ Fahrenheit), for most of the day and night, making it such an ideal place for a winter break..
Think of 365 clean beaches, a variety of activities including all the water sports activities you could handle, a warm sun for tanning and relaxation with friendly staff all over.
The time to book a winter break is as soon as possible, as the summer months are really, really very hot and summer time is unfortunately also the hurricane period, even though Antigua (and sister island Barbuda) has been spared a direct hit for many years. Antigua offers a wide variety of resorts to cater for everything, whether it's a honeymoon-to-never-forget or to bring the whole family. We have often been surprised to see fairly regularly reasonably sized groups helping elderly parents celebrate a 30, 40 or even 50th wedding anniversary. You might of course also be looking for a luxurious hide away, with limo ride and all, or perhaps something more discreet... well, you will find it in Antigua. Then there's also those who prefer a B&B or a good ole self catering affair and for this last one, you may wonder if there's a decent grocery outlet? The answer is yes, besides many well stocked grocery shops dotted all over the place, including liquor stores, the Epicurean offers everything and more, including a very wide selection of fine wines from around the world, cigars and of course fresh fruit and vegetables.... not exactly meant as being the order of importance, but hey, we'll leave it up to you!!
As for the cultural and 'what to see' category we'd suggest you check out the variety of activities to which you could either take yourself by renting a car or have a taxi meet you right at your hotel or villa for a day or half day excursion. An important point to keep in mind is to always finalize the cost of your trip before you leave, even better, pay the hotel and rather use their recommended list of operators.
When it comes to the 'what to do' question, after you decided on when you'll be visiting, remember there's a lot of sea to see and enjoy. One of the activities my wife and I have had the privilege to enjoy more than once came about after meeting with Wayne and Lara who run a fabulous catamaran, called Coolcat. This day sailing operation suited us because we just don't have the sea legs you need for commuting otherwise between the islands, while they stick closer to the coastline, stop for swimming, lunch etc. You may also find on the island a tree top tours outfit, called Antigua Zip Line Tours and a fabulous clay pigeon shooting range at 'Antigua Clays' and many more... after all, when you start traveling like this, the easiest way to get more information and doing yourself a favour, is to search for websites about the island and look for those that offer lists like 'A top 20 list of things do' - you'll be amazed how short your seven or ten day holiday will be passing by!
Loved the article. Wish I was there ...... we had a bad winter this year but not as bad as others especially our eastern provinces in Canada and see the bad weather in the States on tv, so somehow we have not too much to complain about but I'd rather have the warmth all the time. I was in Antigua twice at hotels and once as a ships stop.
Thanks for sharing! This is one of the places I have yet to visit, but have on my list. Now, maybe it will rate even higher on my list! Thanks for the info!
Thanks a lot, Joe. You just made my bucket list longer! :-)
You're welcome... and many of your fellow country folk make it happen every year...
That's it, i'm heading south for the winter. These cold NW Washington state winters are getting to me. Great article, look forward to more.
Come to North Myrtle Beach Don! We were hanging out on the beach last week with temps in the low 70s - calling for 70 again next week - Imagine 71 degrees in January - WOW! - Course if you had the time and budget... I would probably keep on going South and hit Antigua like Joe did.
I want to go to Antiqua and take that Catamaran trip - One Day - Will add it to the bucket list!
Love Antigua. We went on our honeymoon last April for 7 days. The people there are very nice and well respected, but they're crazy drivers, lol. The island is so beautiful with so much to see. Our guide told us that there's no sharks or jelly fish which was good to know when we were practically lost out to sea when paddle surfing on a windy day. Luckily, someone from the resort saved us by boat, lol. Definitely an adventure!! Great Article!!
Thanks and happy to know you made it back safely, but the water temperature in April was probably a degree below that of your typical bath water...
