Alcoholism is a disease. It is not some voluntary condition you walk right into. Of course, you could argue that the act of drinking is a voluntary one. But once you become addicted to it, it can become something that consumes you and deprives you of your free will to resist the temptation to drink it. This type of addiction is like a disease.
What happens if you become addicted to alcohol? As your body begins to develop a tolerance for the level of alcohol that is in your body, before you start feeling that “buzz”, you will find that you will need to drink even more and more alcohol in order to experience that some buzz that you were once able to experience with far less alcohol in your body. But the more alcohol you consume, the greater the level of harm you are causing for yourself. Therefore, if you are going to undergo some form of treatment for alcoholism, through a rehabilitation center, for example, here are some of the goals that you can expect to accomplish as a result of your treatment and rehabilitation:
1. You will undergo a thorough detoxification from the effects of alcohol in your body. You will be reconditioning your body to be less addicted to it and less dependent upon it. The process of detoxification will reduce that tolerance threshold at which you would feel that “buzz”, which means it will actually take you less alcohol to feel the same buzz, thus reversing the “tolerance” build up.
2. You will go through a comprehensive (re)education on the negative consequences of drinking alcohol. While most of us have already received alcohol education in middle school and high school, far too many of us still don’t “get it”. We still allow ourselves to get drunk and make bad decisions while intoxicated. And so therefore, if you end up committing yourself to a recovery home, one of your top priorities should be to educate yourself on the evils of alcohol abuse.
3. In order to overcome your alcohol addiction and to prevent yourself from a potential relapse in the future, it is imperative that you undergo therapy and counseling while at a recovery home. In order overcome your alcohol addiction, it is important that you identify what exactly is the root cause of the problem that caused you to turn to alcohol in the first place. Many people turn to alcohol as a means of “escape” from the problems they are facing in life, not realizing that the temporary “buzz” they feel is just temporary but the physical harm being done to your body is permanent. Therefore, counseling and therapy are effective weapons in the fight against alcoholism, as these help you cure the problem at its roots, by resolving the issue in your life that is causing you to fill the void with alcohol in the first place.
