Do You Really Need A Cleanse: The Good, the Bad And the Nasty

Gwyneth Paltrow is famous for discussing them. Beyonce reportedly dropped tons for her role in Dream Girls with the Master Cleanse. Celebrities are often the first to brag about how well their detox cleanse worked for them but they often do not mention the drawbacks. To be fair, Nicole Ritchie's recent tweet did come closest to hitting the disgusting nail on the TMI head but there are several things that are often glossed over, downplayed or outright forgotten until you are back in your bathroom once again and wondering why oh why you listened to Gwynnie and why oh why you never got around to painting in here.

To be honest, a cleanse is ridiculous for most of its stated reasons. You are not going to lose real weight and if you are only doing it to drop a set amount of weight for a one time event, then get ready to gain back every pound you do manage to lose and then some. There is only one real reason to try a cleanse at all- to break a bad food habit. Otherwise you are better off trying something saner. Like wrestling angry bears while trying out your new honey scented bath gel.

If you insist on trying a cleanse, then stick to one that is more realistic and sustainable. Eating four to six small, clean meals is a good way to reset your system and does not require you to subsist on just liquids. Those diets are hard to maintain because the body requires solid foods and hunger is a terrible foe to deal with. Eating clean for 85-95% of the time will give you the health benefits that you want, including weight loss but will not force you to gag down terrible concoctions that are dangerous especially when used in the long term.

Before you start a cleanse make sure that you are not anemic or otherwise nutritionally comprised and then, confirm that you will be getting enough calories per day. It is a very rare person that can actually function properly on less than 1200 calories per day (more for men). Some of the so called celebrity diets come in at 800 calories and will destroy your metabolism. If you plan to be active while following these plans, your calorie needs will be even higher.

Consider this, Beyonce has been very vocal about how much she hated the Master Cleanse and often talks about how quickly the weight came back when she stopped using it. Healthy, safe weight loss is a possibility without having to live on a glassful of stuff that you have to gag every time you have to drink it.
