Memphis River Closing, How Do You Close A River?

Something really caught my eye this morning when reviewing the mornings news, the headline said, "Memphis river closing" and I thought, how do you close a river? Well, once I started reading it all made sense.

What is going on?

Seems the water levels are at record lows at Memphis, roughly over 12 feet below the normal average, and the coast guard has closed the river to shipping while they try to dredge the river.

The average depth of 9 feet is needed to keep the barges from bottoming out on the river bottom, and areas of the river all the way down to Louisiana are too shallow for barges to pass,Many barges have been running half loaded, at a huge loss of revenue to the companies running them.

Why is this happening?

Liiving in the Midwest in the Mississippi River valley makes one take notice of river and water changes, and I have noticed a huge difference in water levels in the last year.

Ponds that I used to fish in when I was a kid are now showing their bottoms, and streams that used to produce some of the feistiest trout are now dry.

What is happening is we are going through a major drought and it is effecting our water levels greatly. While this is something we can really not do much about, what is happening to our ground water because of the drought is frightening.

We now are not getting fresh rain water to help naturally filter into our polluted groundwater to help bring it back to healthy levels.

How bad is it?

Because of years of poor water pollution practices even without the drought the water quality has been seriously damaged in this country, to the point of making us sick when we drink it.

Many people used to believe that if they had their own well they had the best water available but that is no longer the case, all of our drinking water is tainted and in need of filtering.

What can we do about it?

Every single household in this country needs to be filtering the water they drink, cook with and bathe in. Every person needs to practice conserving and protecting our water supply and stopping those who do not follow the rules.

The Mississippi River closing is the result of mother nature, but maintaining and improving the quality of the water that is left is up to us, and we need to start taking care of what is left of it, and filtering what we use.

just hope drinking water doesn't become expensive because of this as it happens in most developing countries when something like this happens.

You have hit on a very important topic here, my friend. Water is necessary for life! We haven't had any rainfall for almost 3 months now. Getting to be a rough go. You have a great point to have a filter system in the house.

I wonder how long before they can re open the river.

They are dredging the sad off the bottom as we speak. The problem is staying on top of it. Up north where I am we have whole islands and parts of our towns that were created by the sand dredged up from the bottom of good old Miss!

I hope they keep on it from now on, closing down shipping lanes makes prices go sky hi!

Interesting article Shawn, would hate to think that our rivers here would dry up too, no fishing for me then :-( ! However the problem with contamination is a real threat we all need to take action.

Hi Shawn. Here in St Louis it was big news when the barges had to shut down due to the low rivers. The drought has been awful here this year, even this fall we've gotten low rain falls. I agree with you, we need to be better stewards of our resources. In Australia and the UK water conservation is of utmost concern; the US should get on board quickly. Good article, Shawn.

Hard to imagine a substantial river like the Mississippi drying out. In the UK at present we have the opposite problem i.e. too much rain, water levels too high, and widespread flooding. Yet two years ago water levels were at record lows. How delicate and important the natural balances of our environments are.

It is. I hope some of that gets into your ground water levels, seems when it comes down that fast it all runs into the ocean and does more damage to the ground water with chemical run off. Thanks for stopping by!

If more people don't start taking care of our environment, nothing is going to be left. This just proves it.
