Controlling Type II Diabetes

When one’s body lacks the ability to effectively use insulin, he/she has type II diabetes. Insulin is a hormone that helps in the entering of blood sugar into the body cells and converting it to energy.

The inability to use insulin results in high level of glucose in the blood system, a condition that is very harmful to the body. It is of paramount importance that one learns how to control the condition for their own good.

There are five key steps that have proven quite practical and helpful.

  • Firstly, one must make a point to lose at least ten pounds. Statistics show that over 80% of type 2 diabetes patients are obese. Losing ten pounds is quite achievable bearing in mind that it will go a long way in maintaining good sugar levels to make wise choices about what is in the diet and how much they should take. Of great importance, is to read the labels to understand the servings that one is taking.
  • Secondly, it is important for one to increase their activity. This is as opposed to exercise whereby very few people can keep up, in essence one can increase activity in their daily schedules easily compared to a routine exercise. Such include taking the stairs as opposed to the elevator. Additionally, it is important that a patient increases their walking.

A pedometer is essential in measuring one’s daily steps. Patients with other conditions such as arthritis can take up other low-impact activities such as swimming which in essence helps both conditions.

  • Thirdly, one must quit smoking. Patients who have type 2 diabetes and smoke at the same time present themselves with a slow suicide recipe. Smoking does more harm than good as it accelerates diabetes complications. Patients must take measures to help them stop this habit.

Relaxation is very fundamental for patients who want to control the type II diabetes condition. When one is under stress, the body react to physically, a response commonly known as “fight and flight”. Subsequently, this response negatively impacts the patient’s blood sugar levels.

The impact of stress is not only in the stress itself, but also in the response that one gives it. Some people do not eat right and therefore impacts in accelerating the complications of diabetes type 2. Patients with stress should take action which includes engaging stress relieving activities. They include meditation, relaxation exercises and deep breathing.

  • The last step involves monitoring one’s blood glucose levels. This means that the patient is cautious of their blood sugar levels at different times of the day. This helps in understanding the impact of the activities that one is engaging in controlling the condition.

Controlling diabetes type II involves having a tight glucose control in a patient’s body. Since this is a metabolic disorder, we should watch what we feed.

It is important that one takes action in losing weight, taking the right food and right quantities of it, relaxing, quitting smoking and finally monitoring the progress of the above activities with regard to blood sugar control. It is only from this point that a patient are able to lead a normal healthy lifestyle.
