Diabetes And Cumin

We are living in days when diseases are many while the cures are few. This has been widely caused by unhealthy lifestyles in today’s busy society. Diabetes is one the diseases whereby about 8.9 percent of the population has the disease. Research still goes on to discover the cure or at least ways of controlling the disease. Cumin has proved its great benefits to diabetics.

It is a spice traditionally used by the Mexicans, Indians and Thais in different cuisines. For centuries, it has been essential in adding flavor to food. Today, this herb promises positive effects in controlling blood sugar levels. When you use it, you not only spice up your diet, but potentially prevent and control the risks of diabetes.

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder whereby the body is unable to process glucose (blood sugar) normally. Glucose accumulates in the body up to very unhealthy levels and causes one of the four types of diabetes.

  • In pre diabetes, blood sugar levels rise at moderate levels.
  • Type 1 diabetes on the other hand is genetic and occurs mostly in children.
  • Type 2 diabetes is the most common and occurs in adults especially those who are obese.
  • Gestational diabetes occurs in pregnant mothers.

Any type of diabetes when left untreated leaves you at risk of complications such as stroke, heart disease, blindness, nerve and kidney damage.

Research conducted in Pakistan using rabbits was to investigate the effects of cumin on diabetics. The results of the survey published in the March 2000 showed promises in the diabetes discovery journey. Blood sugar levels lowered in the rabbits within the first two hours of administration of this herb. Another research conducted in 2010 showed that it controlled blood sugar levels better than some prescription drugs.

The spice also helps to inhibit Advanced Glycation End (AGE) product formation, which in diabetics causes blood vessel damage.

Why should you take this herb?

  • It inhibits AGE formation which can lead to other health complications
  • It delays the progressions of cataracts which is common in diabetics

This spice is very beneficial to diabetics, the more reason that you should take it. It keeps your blood sugar levels in check. However, if you are on diabetes medication, you should see your doctor before you take these supplements. This move ensures that you use the two at a level where it does not lead to low blood sugar levels.

Include cumin in your diet not only as a spice, but as a natural remedy to diabetes!
