Diabetes, Dieting And the Real Truth About Calories

One year, the hottest diet trend is high protein. The next year, the trend is low fat. Those types of diets can be hard to stick with especially because they represent some very major changes to the lifestyle of the average person. But, according to a new study, there may be a far simpler suggestion, one that is so simple, that it might be hard to believe. That study, authored in part by Jeremy D. Krebs, a senior lecturer with the school of medicine and health sciences, proves that it is the number of calories that matter, not whether they are coming from protein or carbohydrates. For the diabetic, that can be very encouraging news as they work to whittle their weight down.

Krebs found that no matter what kind of diet plan was given to people to follow, they just could not maintain it for the long term. The diets typically were very strict and left no room for flexibility at all. Flexibility and the ability to adapt and adjust as dieting needs changed were key concepts to the success of any type of diet plan.

In the study performed by Krebs and his team, three hundred men and women, all ages 35-75 were asked to participate in a new, two year program. All of the people in the study were moderately overweight and each had Type 2 Diabetes. The participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups: either a high protein, low fat plan or a high carbohydrate, low fat one. for their first six months during the study, the groups were all to attend group support sessions twice a week. These groups were all led by dieticians. In the last six months, the meetings were held once a month instead.

A number of physical evaluations, including their weight, waist measurements, kidney function and their blood lipid profile were taken at the beginning of the study as well as at the one year mark and then at the end. They were each asked to keep food diaries as well. Evaluations of those showed that both groups had a reduction in the number of total calories consumed and by the end of the study, both groups had also lost a similar amount of weight. All other assessments were similar in both of the groups leading to the conclusion that it did not matter if you were eating a high protein or high carbohydrate diet as long as you were carefully monitoring your intake of calories and keeping it low fat over all.

Experts now agree that high protein diets may allow for rapid weight loss in the beginning of the diet, but overall, the process slows down after the first few weeks. The problem with a diet plan that is strict or overly restrictive is that it can get boring after awhile. Now dieters now that they can interchange foods as long as they are mindful of the calorie counts and portion sizes.
