He called himself Mr. Positive. He is a band musician with all the best things that life has. His fans love and adore him. But sadly, Nick has diabetes. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the tender age of 16, Nick was a bit shocked since he had no medical history. He took the blood test after the usual symptoms that turned out positive. The story relates to some of us who have diabetes, but what is unique about Nick Jonas?
It is what he did with his symptoms. Nick noticed the usual symptoms associated with diabetes; losing weight, increased thirst, moodiness and increased urge to urinate. His parents took him for a blood test that showed that indeed he had diabetes type 1. This is the major step that everyone who experiences such symptoms should take to save their lives.
As a young teenager with a great career, he got worried that he might die. That led to an emotional breakdown largely because he knew nothing about diabetes. He would ask just as many of us do, “why me?”But the turning point for Nick was when he changed his attitude and asked, “Why not me?” Again, Mr. Positive teaches us a lesson.
When diagnosed with diabetes, there is a risk of an emotional breakdown which is because we do not understand the diabetes enigma. It is important at this point to cool down and take charge of the situation. This includes getting all the information we can on diabetes as this will change our attitude positively. You cannot fight what you deny, and so it is important that we acknowledge our plight and face life head-one. As Nick testifies, diabetes is not a death sentence.
Brave Nick Jonas took his career platform to encourage others with diabetes. During a performance at a Diabetes Research Institute fund - raising, he went public about his type 1 diabetes status. This encouraged other young kids to come out about their diabetes status. That’s another lesson from Mr. Positive! One can use any platform to educate the public on diabetes. It does not matter your age it is all about your attitude and taking charge of the situation.
Nick portrays a positive attitude that helps in the fight against diabetes. If you have diabetes either as a young person or an adult, your treatment process does not really depend on the kind of medication you take. It depends on your attitude towards the disease. Take a positive attitude that will help you to live positively: eating and staying healthy.
