Diabetes In Youth

The second decade of life is a very hyper time for every person. It is a time when one creates their identity, becomes independent and knows what life really entails. But to some youth below the age of twenty, it has become a sad part of their lives. Every day more and more diagnoses have been found among the young people. The increase of diabetes among the youth is largely attributed to both genetics and the environment.

Diabetes type 1 is now being diagnosed in more children and youth regardless of race. Interestingly, most of these teenagers are overweight. Statistics show that about a third of the US youth are either overweight or obese. Obesity is more often than not associated with diabetes, although there is no causal relationship between the two.

With the number of teenage diabetes diagnosis increasing by the day, these young people face one major problem: lack of medication. This is because two decades ago, diabetes in children below 15 years old was unheard of. Medical experts concentrated on finding medication for diabetes only in adults. Research in finding prescription for young people are always sought by medical experts and researchers.

So what is the fate of the diabetic youth? With such observation, children and teenagers with diabetes have no option but to rely on other ways of controlling their blood sugar levels. All hope is not lost; there is hope for our diabetic youth!

It is important that young people be taught on ways through which they can lead healthy lifestyles. This is even before the onset of diabetes. In fact, children as young as five years old should get informed about the benefits of staying and eating healthy. This way, we will be able to cut down on the increasing diabetes diagnosis among the youth.

For the already diabetic youth, we must have faith in other available ways of controlling diabetes, apart from conventional medicine. Eating right is the first thing that we should adhere to. It is hard to cut all the chocolate and junk food craving, but it helps. This way, we can check on our weight and blood sugar levels. Exercise is the second thing added on the young people’s daily schedules. They must not spend hours in front of TV sets and computers. Out-door activities such as walking and sports need emphasis.

Of great importance is to seek out for herbal treatments that have been known to control diabetes. This is because most herbal treatments are found easily and have no side effects. Lastly, the youth need much information on diabetes.
