Diabetes Type I Symptoms

Diabetes is a condition whereby the body does not make enough insulin or the insulin does not work efficiently causing increased sugars. Insulin helps glucose to enter the body cells. A diabetic condition occurs when insulin does not work as it should and glucose stays in the blood. There are two types of diabetes, type 1 and 2.

Type 1 is common in young people mostly below age 30 but can also occur in the elderly. The total population of people with diabetes in the US, about 5-10% of them have type 1 diabetes. The occurrence in men and women is equal. The exact cause of this disease is not yet known.

Symptoms of type 1 diabetes are:

  • Blurred vision

If your vision is not as clear as it was, it could be a sign of diabetes. Fluid comes from all tissues which include eye lenses.

  • Increased thirst and hunger

Excess sugar in the blood forces fluid from the body tissues leaving one very thirsty. When the muscles and the body organs lack energy, one feels intense pangs of hunger even after eating.

  • Increased urge to urinate

The unusual thirst leads to one drinking a lot and the urge to urinate increases.

  • Weight loss even with increased appetite

Even with the increased appetite, you may lose weight and in some instances, very rapidly. This is because there are no energy supplies which leads to shrinking of muscle tissues and fats stores.

  • Decreased mental sharpness
  • Recurring skin and yeast infections

There are instances when emergency symptoms may develop. This is as a result of very high blood sugar:

  • Loss of co-ordination and confusion
  • Fruity-smelling breath
  • Slurred speech
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Unconsciousness

It is important that you seek medical attention immediately you have any of these signs and symptoms. It is the only way we are sure that they are symptoms of diabetes. Long term complications of diabetes type 1 in the body are serious. They include heart attack, stroke, blindness, nerve damage, slowed stomach and intestines movements and increased risk of infections.

Good news!

Type 1 diabetes complications can easily be prevented or delayed. If blood sugars are kept under control, one can live positively with diabetes. It is up to you to check for the symptoms and seek medical attention as fast as possible.

Most of the symptoms of diabetes, if taken singly do not relate to the disease. If you experience two or more of the symptoms at a go, then you need to take a blood test for proper diagnosis.
