Effects Of Sugar During Pregnancy

A number of pregnant women battle with cravings for various things, sugar being one of them. Many believe that sugar is not bad during the pregnancy period. This is because it is common to see a pregnant mother eating a piece of chocolate cake enjoying every bit of it.

What are the effects of sugar during pregnancy? One of the effects during this period is that it leads to a difficult pregnancy. When one takes sugar in large quantities, it means that there would be an increase in the amount of insulin produced by the liver. Because of this occurrence, the blood sugar levels cannot be effectively controlled and regulated.

When too much sugar is in the blood, it leads to an increase in the functioning of important organs such as the pancreas and the liver making them overworked. When this happens, it leads to complications such as gestational diabetes. The organs are unable to control the blood sugar levels in the body.

The other issue that arises from the intake of sugar during pregnancy is giving birth to an obese baby. We know that every mother dreams of having a bouncy baby at the end of the nine months of gestation, however, if she doesn’t take care of her daily sugar intake, this might not come to pass. This is because this leads to the baby growing extremely large, which is unhealthy to both the mother and the baby. The mother will have a difficult time giving birth naturally, while the baby could be prone to complications such as heart failure and diabetes at a tender age.

High levels of sugar during the early stages of pregnancy is very dangerous. This is because those suffering from diabetes mellitus or Type 1 Diabetes lose their unborn babies within the first eight weeks of pregnancy. That is why expectant mothers need to regularly check their blood sugar levels to avoid miscarriages.

Damage to the liver and one or both kidneys also occur, making them not able to regulate and purify water and other products from the digestive system. This leads to retardation of the baby's growth, which in most cases the baby is born prematurely.

It is important for mothers to watch what they eat during pregnancy, in order avoid complications not only for the baby’s sake but for their own good too. A healthy mother makes a healthy baby and a healthy baby makes a healthy world.
